2010 Was The Year Of Children's Product Recalls

2010 Was The Year Of Children's Product Recalls

The year 2010 was one of great anxiety for parents and California product liability attorneys

. Last year we saw a large number of children's product recalls, involving everything from cribs and strollers to medications. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over the past 11 months, the agency had to recall 230 products used by infants and children. That was an increase of 63% from 2009.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the deadliest recalls were those related to strollers, cribs and baby carriers. These defective products resulted in several fatalities in 2010. Besides, 2010 also saw a large number of children's medications being recalled. Primary among these recalls were several announced by Johnson & Johnson. These included a number of blockbuster children's medications, including the popular antipyretic medication, Tylenol. However, just about every other medicine brand also announced massive recalls last year, causing anxiety among parents everywhere. Chief on the recall list were products that were formulated to deal with the common cold. Other products that were recalled included Benadryl, Zyrtec and Morin.

A breakdown of the children's product recalls last year shows that most recalls in 2010 were linked to cribs, specifically drop side cribs. In June, more than two million cribs were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. That was accompanied by several smaller recalls, announced by just about every crib manufacturer in the country. Finally, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reacted in 2010 by announcing a complete ban on the sale, manufacture, importation and distribution of drop side cribs. These cribs are no longer allowed to be sold inside the US.

In fact, the new crib safety laws also apply to hotels, motels and day care centers and other establishments that use cribs. These establishments also cannot equip their facilities with drop side cribs.

At least five major manufacturers of infant carriers and car seats announced recalls in 2010. Foremost among these was the massive Infantino baby sling recall, which involved more than 1 million baby slings. That recall was linked to the death of at least three babies from suffocation in the slings. Bag-style slings have become extremely popular with modern mothers, but have increased the risk of suffocation to infants who can get smothered in the soft fabric of the sling.

In 2010, Graco recalled about 2.5 million strollers after children became trapped in the strollers and choked to death. At least five other children suffered fingertip amputations from defective hinges in their canopy stroller.

Apart from these, a range of children's products, including hoodies, sweaters and toys were also recalled last year. Hopefully, 2011 will see more safety for children's products.
