150th Anniversary of Old Summer Palace Suffering Robbery
Year 2010 is the 150th anniversary for Yuanmingyuan
, or the generally known as Old Summer Palace suffering great robbery during Qing Dynasty. According to the spokesperson of Old Summer Palace, a series of activities will be taken place from September 27 as a remembrance to this tragedy.As a whole, the series of activities will be held under the theme of Peace, Cooperation and Harmony. In between, academic forums, exhibitions, international cultural fellowships and theme party will be carried out. The theme party that expected by most of the visitors will light up the night on October 18.
Throughout the occasion period, many of the robbed treasures that were returned to China will be exhibited for the first time. Moreover, about 150 articles of the recovery pieces will be exhibited for the first time as well. According to the management team, 1884 pieces of broken ceramic have been selected out from over 30000 pieces for the exhibition purpose. After cleaning, rearrangement and recovery of the pieces, there will be about 60 recovered items to show their original looks during the exhibition.
The Old Summer Palace was in fact a huge imperial garden which had been constructed over 150 years by 6 generations of Qing Emperors. Covering an area of over 350 ha with more than 160 scenic spots within the park was once well known for the arts of Chinese garden, cultural aesthetics and ancient Chinese architectural design. However, the garden was robbed and destroyed by Anglo-French Allied Force in year 1860.
