Small snacks and drinks. But dont hand them out all at once as kids are like vacuums with food.
Story tapes and DVDs can help time pass quickly.
Let your children take photographs and write a journal about their trip. Fun, educational and something they can share with family and friends.
Wrap a few small toys, books or games that can act as a reward for good behaviour during the journey.
Small craft or art projects can while away the time.
Take a change of clothes, a first aid kit and something to remove the smell of little accidents. A change of clothes can help freshen even the adults.
Soccer, tennis or footballs are worth the space they take up. Chasing around playing a game at a rest stop can work wonders and rejuvenate the most jaded of travellers.
Plan your trip before you go. Do you really need to drive straight through for 12 to 15 hours. Having driven 12 hours from the South of France to catch a ferry back to England I can tell you overnight with young kids asleep works but taking 2 - 3 days with lots of back road adventures is more interesting.
