" CHILDHOOD LAMENTING "

What does education mean? you want to use schools as socially-engineer-manager transformation machines ? or you want schools to make children as intelligent as possible so that kids learn a lot?

I know plenty of articles have already been produced earlier but stillscenarioremains the same. We people are still baffling with our own thoughts and views ; thus no major steps have been taken which will actually make India again an ornated golden bird ,which it used to be once. Majority of laws have been passed but then still they need to be properly implemented so that it helps in recuperating us from this phase of " Childhood Lamenting".

To be educated is to be taught in a way that I believe will help you to succeed in the real world. Education is the idea that is supposed to be taught in schools all across the World, but is it really being taught? Education means something and is defined differently by many different people. A few people who have different views on what the meaning of education is are Paolo Friere, Bell Hooks, and Theodore Sizer.

In the words of Paolo Friere, professor at Harvard University, in "The Banking Concept", "education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor." Education is nothing more than the act of spitting out information by the teacher for the student to be able to "patiently receive, memorize, and repeat."Friere believes that education should be the act of working together between the teacher and the student to give out and obtain.According to the Oxford English Dictionary one of the definitions of theword "education" is: "The systematic instruction, schooling or training given tothe young in preparation for the work of life; by extension, similar instruction

or training obtained in adult age. Also, the whole course of scholasticinstruction which a person has received. Often with limiting words denoting thenature of the predominant subject of the instruction or kind of life it prepares,as classical, legal, medical, technical, commercial, art education." Althoughthis is an accurate description of what an actual education may be, there is agreat deal more to the process of becoming educated than the actual instructionand schooling one may receive.If you asked a person in high school or college exactly why he is inschool his response would probably have something to do with "getting aneducation." Is that really why he is there? The next question.

Picture to yourself a crowded scene in a train crossing through the rural belt of India. The train stops for some time for track clearance and a couple of kids in rags enter the compartment with brooms. As the gentlemen seated in the seats discuss about the impact of recession on the Indian growth story a boy of about fourteen, brushes the area below their seats. He is at work. But what is the pay? After having swept the whole compartment he comes and begs. Some generous folks drop a coin or two on his hands; some give away some food that they had been carrying. With the same dirty hands that he had swept the passages he licks up a bowlful of rice someone was generous enough to give him. This he accepts as payment.

Statistics unveils a draconian reality - there are almost 38% of doctors and 49% of engineers in USA but only 10% of doctors and 12% engineers in India because in India Childhood is commonly found working in factories, cleaning roads and compartments. or else sitting outside schools and offices mending shoes of passers just for earning two times bread for thier own family. Childhood is apprehended by " Child labour" at a age when these children should be found playing and enjoying their life , they are found struggling with their own present and their future seems to be a complete black-out.India is a country that is accredited for being amongst the leading flag bearers to enlighten the primitive world dominated by ignorant people. It was India that realized the importance of aspects of life other than filling the stomach and covering the bodies, man is a special animal, special because of the grey matter God provided and it was India that by promoted free and radical thinking helped in quenching the thirsty brains. But on comparing the past with the present we find a sharp contrast in terms of the quality of intellectuals produced by the country, in the mad race for materialism it seems thatthe basic fundamentals that made us a great country are being trampled underfoot.Intellects are people who see the world from a different perspective and on the larger canvas. It is such people who contribute to the world hence moving it in a progressive direction as is a saying Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people'. The intellectual growth of a person begins right from childhood when he starts to develop a thinking brain, when he questions the different aspects of life and the process continues till the individual survives so the primary reason for the stark decline in the level of intellect has to be improper foundation and upbringing in terms of the type and style of education bestowed upon them.

Nowadays, due to the education curriculum in practice, a lot of emphasis is given on the bookish knowledge, be it the class works or the strenuous homework, a student stints to the boundaries of books and is restricted by the deadlines of assignments. The world is too diverse to be reduced to dull uniformities of rules.Education practice such as this pushes the student in a niche thereby closing his mind to the joys and beauty of life. As a general practice a student is always asked to replicate the notes provided by the school teachers and swaying away from the set path leads to deduction of marks hence creativity is nipped in the bud.We have forgotten the fact that curriculum and education should be such which make students ambidextrous and not just the cramming bug. No student is ever asked what he likes to do or what he is good at rather the custom education curriculum is imposed resulting in mental fatigue and frustration so a student who if allowed to grow in a free environment could have contributed to the nation in a big way is now transformed into a less eccentric individual with no freedom of thought. As a direct consequence thequality of intellectuals found in our country is decreasing at an exponential rate.The point stated above is proved when we have a look into the education system followed by the developed western countries where individuality is given foremost importance and their education curriculum is based on the same principle. As a result individuals with free mind and great ideas are produced contributing to the growth of their country in general and the world in particular.Our education policy induces a herd mentality and hence curbs the growth of free thinking individuals who could lead to great ideas and discoveries. Small students are made to carry extremely heavy school bags harming them physically and then they're made to follow the customary norm without expressing their feedbacks, hurting them mentally.And now with the increase in the number of suicide cases amongst students it is clear that students are finding it tough to cope with the immense pressure of mugging up books aimlessly without being able to contribute something back.It is of grave importance to identify and combat this very serious matter else we will be living in an India where finding intellectuals would be a rarity.

In the end i would only say that India needs to get optimistic and take felicitous steps in the field of education which will certainly revive the education system in India.
