Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Many people only think of having their third molars taken out when they start experiencing pain or swelling
. These symptoms can emerge because these molars can become impacted. This means, there may be little room left in the gums for them to occupy. According to recent medical evidence most people don't need their wisdom teeth removed, even if the teeth are impacted. In fact some evidence suggests that removing healthy impacted wisdom teeth is not advised due to the risk of nerve damage. A wisdom tooth only needs to be taken out if there is an infection around the tooth, there is damage to a neighboring tooth, there is a cavity in the tooth that your dentist can't treat, and/or there is a cyst in your jaw.
Post operation the effect of local anesthesia wears off in a few hours and the patients start feeling the pain and discomfort, coupled with swelling. This is normal in surgical cases and the healing process takes anywhere from 48 hours to 72 hours to begin healing. The possible complexities of having wisdom teeth removed should not be causes for severe anxiety. Many other individuals have perfectly uncomplicated circumstances and removal need not take a lot of time or effort. If the tooth is growing sideways, it is called an impacted wisdom tooth. In these cases, it has to be extracted. When the tooth is already infected, it also has to be taken out.
If you ask dentists, they will tell you that getting a dry socket is something quite "unpredictable", although there are some risk factors which increase of the chances of its formation. But generally, the chances of it happening are high if (a) the teeth extracted is the lower third molar teeth (another name for wisdom teeth) and (b) the wisdom tooth is impacted and it was removed surgically. Now here are some things you may find out later on, unless you do your homework and read up as much as you can about the possible complications of wisdom removal. Around 10 to 15 percent of patients who had their wisdom teeth removed experience a dry socket several days after the procedure. The wounds will bleed and ooze for up to three days after the surgery. One should refrain from rinsing their mouth as blood clots need to form and rinsing could dislodge the clots. After 24 hours past the surgery, it is good to rinse with lukewarm saltwater.
In the event that the teeth have been impacted surgery will be needed to help with taking care of the gums. For surgery the dentist will have to work with an oral surgeon for the process. As the gums are cut open portions of the wisdom teeth will be progressively removed during the process. Anti-inflammatory medication is used to control minor discomfort following oral surgery. Stronger analgesics may be prescribed by the dentist if the patient is in extreme discomfort. You may occasionally also have swelling of the lymph nodes, which are effected by impacted teeth. Sometimes your wisdom tooth doesn't have any other problems it has not grown enough to cut through the gum line and then cause this swelling of the lymph nodes.
