Traveling With Children? Maps Make Inexpensive Fun

Maps are great fun for kids and can make every trip an adventure

. Add some education to your next trip by working with maps.

On the Road:

- Find a map that includes both the start of the trip and the destination and have the children locate both spots and highlight the route in between. Older children can use the legend to determine how many miles the trip is and how long it should take. Have them check their answer on-line.

- If you are a member of AAA, you can request free maps and route information from your local branch. Let the kids pick a few fun pit stops along the way.

- Pack a variety of maps that use different scales or have different themes. When the children start asking, "Are we there yet?" hand out maps and let them find their spot on the map.

Destination Ideas:

- Buy several destination maps and give the kids the hotel address to find and mark on the map (this is great for on the plane!). Keep one clean - you might need to use it later!

- Let the kids pick several activities and figure out their map location and how to get there.

- Many tourist destination have free maps of historic of shopping districts. Pick up a few of these to use when picking destinations or recapping the adventures of the day.

- Return home with great memories by using stickers and post it flags to highlight places you visited. This is great for kids that need to bring back a journal of the trip for school.

Maps are inexpensive and can be used by kids in a variety of ways to have fun and learning on a vacation. These are just a few of the ways to include maps and come home with fun memories of the trip.
