Tracking Down Your Chronic Sinusitis Treatment

Is your sinusitis becoming a regular but unpleasant part of your life

? You may be suffering from a chronic condition and, chances are, it won't go away without proper treatment. However, don't automatically go for antibiotics! According to new studies, there are other causes that you have to consider before you start chronic sinusitis treatment. So, how do you track down the treatment for you? We're here to help you with that.

Diagnosis

The first step in treatment is the proper diagnosis. Most of the time, antibiotics don't work because they are not getting to the right cause of the problem. Antibiotics are designed to stop bacterial infections. However, recent studies show that bacterial infections are responsible for sinus problems only a fraction of the time. The Mayo Clinic actually states that antibiotics are usually not needed in acute cases and most chronic cases are caused by things other than bacteria.

Another problem is that sometimes you really aren't suffering from a chronic condition at all. So you really have to get that initial diagnosis right. The American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO) points out that the chronic case can present milder symptoms than an acute case but it should be a consistent problem for at least 3 months (non-stop) before it is said to be chronic.

Proper Cause, Proper Treatment

If you do have a confirmed case of chronic sinusitis, you should then track down the cause of the problem. This is part of the diagnostic process but many people, including doctors, actually overlook this part. Don't just go for an antibiotic treatment; make sure that the treatment you are taking is appropriate for the cause of your problem.

Causes

Other than bacterial causes, allergies and fungal infections can all be at the root of the problem. Try to determine which one is causing your problem. If you can, get a referral to an ENT or Ear Nose Throat Doctor (otorhinolaryngologist or otolaryngologist).

Allergies

For allergies, the best thing you can do is to avoid the allergen. The allergen is the particular material that causes the allergic reaction. You can get blood tests to determine which allergens you should avoid. Recent researches have uncovered a connection between sinus problems and food allergies, particularly to dairy products. If you suspect this, try going without dairy products for at least a week and see if the condition improves in any way.

Fungi

The Mayo Clinic, one of the most respected medical research hospitals in the country, has published reports that suggest fungi as a major but often overlooked cause of chronic sinusitis. In their studies, it was found that 96% of the patients suffering from the chronic sinus condition tested positive for fungal cultures in their mucus. The AAO has gotten on board with these findings and has started to instruct physicians to take fungal infections into consideration when treating sinus cases. Try visiting the AAO website and the Mayo Clinic website and discuss the suggestions with your physician.

Nose Problems

Sometimes the problem is actually an anatomical one, meaning it is caused by a physical problem, usually with the nose. A common nose problem that leads to chronic sinus infections is a deviated nasal septum. Again, consult your ENT. These causes may require surgery so a proper diagnosis is essential.
