This may or may not have resulted in a few tips or possibly even a few interviews. This is a good way to locate employment because the company has a reference for your character from someone they already consider to be reliable.
The second thing that you most likely did was to start buying every newspaper you could and looking in the help wanted sections of the classified section in hopes that someone would have posted information about openings at a place you would be qualified to work. This can also be a good idea as a way to find leads on companies that currently have positions they need to fill with skilled or learned people.
The one thing you may not have done but really need to do is talk to an agency that lists both job openings for the people looking for work, and the resumes of people for the companies that are looking for help. You will find that a lot of your larger corporations use these agencies to pre-screen their applicants for them. Because they use the agency in that manner the corporation may not let anyone else know they are hiring. They will only tell the agents what positions they have and if you are also using those agents to help you locate work then they can match your education and skill level to that of the requirements of the different places that are looking to hire. This means you are more likely to get the job and you are more likely to hear about more openings.
A graduate job does not have the same kind of turn-over rate that non-skilled jobs have so it can seem that it is very difficult to find one. You need to have a little patience for the progress and some confidence in yourself in order for you to locate the perfect career opportunity.
