Tea consumption dates back to nearly five hundred years from now according to the
archeologists and botanical evidence proves that China and India were the first countries that cultivated tea. Tea is now the largely consumed beverage next to water in the whole world. Tea drinkers (nearly 300 people) with esophageal cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) and nearly five hundred and seventy one healthy persons of the same background were interviewed to know their habits of tea drinking.
The questions asked to know the relation between tea and esophageal cancer included how often they drank tea, the brewing time of tea and how they drank tea (whether hot, very hot, lukewarm or warm). It was found that nearly ninety eight percent drank their tea in the form of black tea every day. The study found that people who drank luke warm tea were not that affected when compared to people who drank very hot tea and hot tea. To find the exact temperature researchers used digital thermometers and found that nearly forty percent drank tea of one hundred and forty degrees Fahrenheit, another forty percent drank in the range of one hundred and forty to one hundred and forty seven degrees Fahrenheit and the remaining twenty percent drank tea at one hundred and forty nine degree Fahrenheit or more than that.
The researchers concluded that esophageal cancer was caused due to the hot temperature of the tea than due to their ingredients. They also suggested that if tea was allowed to cool for sometime and drank the effects of getting esophageal cancer can get reduced.
Many studies are also conducted to find the relation between green tea and esophageal cancer as many believe that consuming green tea can reduce the incidence of certain kinds of cancer like esophageal cancer. A study was conducted in China particularly in Shanghai among regular tea consuming people and found out that persons who drink green tea at normal temperatures without any other risk factors like smoking, alcohol and tobacco had lesser risk of getting esophageal cancer than when compared to people who drank hot green tea and who smoked, drank alcohol and used tobacco regularly.
The studies suggested that the presence of polyphenols green tea was responsible for protecting against esophageal cancer as they were high in antioxidant properties.
