Sinus Cancer - Could You Have A Sinus Tumor? Nurse's Guide

If you've been having sinus problems short-term or acute

, or long-term sinus infections or other sinusitis issues you may have thought about the possibility of having sinus cancer. It's a common thought among sinus sufferers but sinus tumors and thus sinus cancer is rare. If you do have a sinus tumor it is more than likely benign which doesn't mean harmless it just means that it isn't cancer. It can still cause some havoc until it's removed or goes away on its own.

Whether your sinus tumor is benign or malignant (meaning cancerous) they are usually detected early because they block your nose and your sinuses. They will produce symptoms just like a sinus infection plus others mentioned below.

A benign tumor is a mass that is abnormal and gets bigger but doesn't spread to other parts of the body. It can get bigger and create a lot of problems and if nothing is done eventually can be fatal. So if you have a mass in your nose or suspect you have one in your sinus cavities get checked out by your doctor right away.

If you do have a sinus tumor the most common type is called an inverted papilloma. It is usually removed surgically using an endoscope that goes up into the nostril. Sometimes they take tissue around it to make sure they got most of it. Leaving any cells, even just one, will cause the tumor to grow again. You can also consider alternative options to surgery especially if the tumor is not blocking vital functions.

If you have a tumor that is malignant it can spread to other parts of the body - even distant parts. There are several types of sinus tumors including squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Malignant cancers include paranasal sinus cancer that forms in the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity cancer that forms in the nasal cavity.

Besides the usual sinus infection symptoms one can expect for sinus cancer look for nosebleeds and other sinus problems.

How could you get sinus cancer? Although it's not always known but some studies show that smokers and people who work around dust or wood dust, leather, nickel, glue or chromium may have an increased risk for malignant cancerous sinus tumors.

If you work around any of these chemicals now take all the precautions you can to protect you sinuses, nasal cavities and lungs from inhaling or coming in contact with them to prevent sinus cancer and developing a sinus tumor.
