Despite the many causes and treatments of shoulder pain, there are also a lot of exercises that can help one avoid experiencing any of its symptoms. As the old adage says prevention is better than cure. But, still there are people lining up the orthopaedic rehabilitation centers of hospitals due to strained or separated shoulder injuries. Athletes engaged in high contact sports are the number one on the list of high-prone shoulder injury patients. Next on the list would be the elders. As one grows older, bone density decreases that's why the old people also suffer from such conditions.

Questions on the importance of shoulder exercises have increased as the number of people suffering from shoulder separation also increased. Since a lot of activities depend on arm and shoulder movement, it is necessary to include even simple shoulder pull-ups in exercise routines since these also help strengthen the shoulder muscles and joints.

Even with simple activities such as reaching behind the back, lifting a toddler, or carrying a bagful of books in one arm can lead to shoulder injuries. Most often, these activities are taken for granted but considering the amount of effort and motion required to perform such tasks, having strong ligaments and muscle area will help prevent the shoulders from executing stressful activities.

Stretching is another important aspect of shoulder exercises. Prior to performing any strenuous activities or sports such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, badminton, or even aerobics, it is vital that stretching is done first. This prepares the body before an activity, thus, relaxing the muscles around the joints.

Pendulum exercises also help strengthen the shoulder joints. This is done by bending forward and allowing the arms to hang and swing left to right or in circular motions. Doing so helps unlock muscle stiffness.

Aside from the arms, stretching exercises must also be done for the neck and upper back. By swaying the head and neck or twisting the head from left to right and back, neck muscles are strengthened and injuries that may occur alongside a shoulder injury can be avoided.

Back exercises are important as well since the shoulders, arms, and neck are all affected when a shoulder injury occurs. Stretching the back up to its limit, but without over-exertion, also helps loosen stiff muscles and build up the back area.

By incorporating these simple exercises in daily routines, one is assured of having stronger upper muscles. Though accidents cannot be totally avoided, at least, preventing one or minimizing the debilitating effects of shoulder injuries is at hand.
