Sending Your Child to University

Sending Your Child to University

There comes a time in every parent's life when it is time to pack up the car, head out to the motorway and take your child to university. This is a very important, emotional and trying time for many people as it is the most obvious sign that your kid has truly grown up. There are lots of ways to get through this task, but just to be helpful here are three things that will help you get through this time.

The most important thing to remember is that just because your child is going to college, it doesn't mean you can't be in their life. With this in mind it is best to establish the ways in which you'll communicate with them. Set aside a couple of days a week when you will both do your best to chat for more than a few minutes; also get in the habit of texting so you can communicate in an unobtrusive manner. If there are major distances involved you should consider using technology like Skype to keep in touch, as it will let you speak over the internet without incurring long-distance charges.

When your child leaves it will open up a lot of time which was previously dedicated to them, you would do well to dedicate these hours to useful pursuits lest you get bored or lonely. Sign up for a class, take up a hobby or even take a major step and get a pet. Now you don't want to replace your child, but who doesn't want a brand new puppy? This should be a very positive step as you can finally reclaim your free time and dedicate it to what makes you happy. Another element of this is travel now that you don't need to worry about parenting as much you can head off on amazing trips around the world.

Finally, you need to ensure that your child has everything they need as they set off on the great adventure that is university. If you know they have all the essentials you will be less inclined to worry about them. Start off by doing a big grocery shop that will fill up their fridge with wholesome healthy food; then move on to the other random stuff that all students need. Look for uni-friendly purchases like bean bags; and mini-fridges. A few hours of shopping will make you feel so much better about the whole venture.

If you follow these three steps you will find shipping your child off to university much easier. That said, it is never going to be a simple task: you will have nurtured these kids for 18 years or more and now they will be off on their own adventures. That said this is a bright time for the both of you as they can begin to fulfil their dreams while you can begin to look out for yourself again. After 18 years of parenting you deserve some time dedicated to doing exactly what you feel like. So go ahead and book yourself a trip around the world, or a weekend in a spa you deserve it.
