Selecting The Right Boat Engine

Selecting The Right Boat Engine

Selecting the right boat engine for your boat is extremely critical

. The reason is because the performance of your boat depends mostly on both the weight and horsepower.

If you have a boat which has been underpowered, it puts a lot of undue pressure on the engine which may not be created for that purpose and hence your boat might not deliver to your expectations in speed and acceleration, giving you poor performance.

Having said that, let us take a look at 4 different motors available for both boats and vessels:

1. External Board MotorSelecting The Right Boat Engine

An external board motor has been very popular and useful especially on small boats. Not only are they much lighter, they are also very powerful and effective.

Usually mounted on the transom of a boat, there are boats available which either offer a motor or even a bracket to mount the motor to.

The entire motor tends to swivel. This provides easy steering while the turning propeller pushes the stern about.

External board motors are available in numerous varieties of sizes and the horsepower can use any type of fuel.

2. Stern Drive

Also known as I/O engines, these motors are normally bulkier than outboard motors.

Comprising of an engine mounted inboard and a lower unit attached to the transom, these motors provide power and versatility.

Alternatively, you can tilt the motor up and down to help provide boat trim as well while cruising.

3. Internal Board Motor

On boats that are longer than 26 feet in length, these motors are just as popular. Same as the stern drive motor, the interior board motor is placed within the boat towards the center, hence providing you good weight proportion.

Internal board motor link directly to the transmission as well as through the hull of the boat. After which the shaft is affixed to a propeller which will rotate and activate the boat.

Because the shaft has been fixed, it is unlikely to swivel around.

Henceforth, a rudder is mounted at the back of the shaft and propeller to help divert the flow of water which determines your steering direction.

4. Jet Drive

One huge advantage that jet propeller has is that its propeller does not cause any damage nor injury to anything in sea. That includes underwater creatures. Usually, they are inboard engines which tend to absorb water flowing through a pump, powered by an impeller.

Following that, the water is dispersed at extremely high pressures through a nozzle which will propel the boat. To boast the boat's steering power, the nozzle needs to swivel. For personal watercraft, I highly recommend jet drive.

Please bear in mind that when power has not been yet applied, jet driven boats tend to lose steering power. The reason being that the stream of water which propels the boat has not been present.

Henceforth, always keep your boats away from both pump intake and do not operate those kinds of boats in shallow water.
