Seborrheic Blepharitis Treatment Options

Many people are familiar with the experience of having inflamed eyelids

, with the rims swelling up and turning red.

Blepharitis is not a serious disease, but it can be quite bothersome to you. Its most common symptoms include burning or stinging sensation in your eye, itchiness in the eyelids and crusty formations on your eyelashes. Foreign body sensation and high sensitivity to light may also be experienced, as in dry eye syndrome. Blepharitis symptoms feel much worse in the morning.

Types of Blepharitis

An infection of the eyelids by Staphylococcus bacteria can lead to blepharitis. The infection usually originates in the root of the eyelashes, causing the build up of dry, scaly concretions. Your eyelid tissues may react negatively to toxic compounds coming from the staph bacteria, leading to inflammation of the inner lining.Seborrheic Blepharitis Treatment Options

The skin problem called seborrhoea, or seborrheic dermatitis, can also cause blepharitis (thus the term seborrheic blepharitis). Seborrheic blepharitis is usually less severe than staphylococcal blepharitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is suspected to induce an over-production of lipids, which irritate sensitive skin tissue as they break up into simpler fatty acids. When the seborrhoea is situated in the eyelids, it can progress into blepharitis.

Another form of blepharitis is a breakdown in the meibomian glands (called meibomian gland dysfunction or MGD). These glands are responsible for producing the lipids that make up the a part of your tear film. The fatty layer inhibits tear evaporation. The glands get blocked or otherwise fail to produce the needed lipids. In some cases, this progresses to inflammation and, consequently, blepharitis. Individuals with a history of eye problems are more likely to get seborrheic and MGD-related blepharitis.

Treatment

All forms of blepharitis are chronic, with no known cure. Your best approach is to manage the disease together with your eye doctor.

You must take pains to cleanse the eyelid frequently. You can mix warm water with some baby shampoo and apply it in gentle strokes with a clean cloth. It may be necessary to scrub the lid a bit to detach sticky material and dried up debris. You remove breeding ground for bacteria when you scrub away the debris. Scrubbing gives the added benefit of encouraging, making tear quality better and slowing down tear evaporation for relief of dry eye symptoms. For good measure, you may want to gently (but firmly) massage the eyelids for further stimulation of the affected glands.

During an ongoing blepharitis outbreak, the eyelid must be cleaned at least two times a day until the symptoms get better. This process can take months.Seborrheic Blepharitis Treatment Options

In staphylococcal blepharitis, your doctor may prescribe topical antibiotics to be applied to the eyelids and lid margins. In severe cases, the doctor may recommend steroid-based creams but will warn you that prolonged steroid use will expose the eye to higher risk of glaucoma and cataract formation.

If you are interested to try alternative treatment, you can look at folk medicine which has traditionally recommended castor oil to address the inflammation brought on by blepharitis.

Castor oil is able to suppress inflammation because of its significant ricinoleic acid content. For this reason, several medical preparations use castor oil in emulsion or in combination with cyclosporine. Increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids can also help manage the inflammation.
