Recruiting Doctors In Rural Scotland

Recruiting Doctors In Rural Scotland

To remedy Rural Scotland's ongoing medical recruitment crisis they are to switch places with the doctors in Central belt

. One way that island based doctors get to practice more is by working in the city and improving their skills. This in turn will open the eyes of city doctors to the situations in the rural area.

This will allow more medics to want to be stationed in the rural areas. It was the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway and Yorkhill in Glasgow who piloted the project. With the cases the area has, a locum pediatrician in Stornoway is presently spending a week in Yorkhill.

Each doctor can take part in this project which runs for about eight weeks. Most consultants and other senior staff do not like working for rural areas as they feel they are isolated from their peers. Many rural consultants are also on call round the clock in their community and the exchange scheme will allow a week's break from night calls.

Many times this crisis is threatening the future of many specialist services. At the Western Isles Hospital half of the consultant are locums, some short term ones have earned over GBP11,000 a week. It is said that the current locum bill reached GBP1.5 million a year.Recruiting Doctors In Rural Scotland

There was a pediatrician who opted to work again after 20 years at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, Britain's largest children's hospital. He did his part until the new system is in place. In this case he says that people are unprepared to accept that any longer. Consultant services will disappear if this scheme did not push through.

A pediatrician will have to help many children. Doctors should not be left in isolation In the Western Isles there are only about with 5,000 children. In a year, about 200 emergency admissions to the children's ward each time. By contrast, Yorkhill will deal with that in a week.

Actually the hospital only has six children's beds and the number of births is also expected to drop from around 200 a year now to 150 over the next decade. It is the managed clinical network with a mainland center that will help save the area.

The pediatrician said that they have started negotiations with Yorkhill and would hope the system will be in place by the end of the year. The project can help a doctor improve his skills, the patient will benefit from that and will keep the consultants in remote areas. This is how the future will be for specialist medicine in remote and rural areas

For these doctors she does not believe that such jobs will be viable without the new system in place. It was also noted that she said advertisements for recruitments will not help unless the systems are in place. On the other hand, if they do not go ahead with the new system they will be sending three times as many children to the mainland for treatment, a move that has big cost implications.
