Recovering From Breast Augmentation Surgery

Recovering From Breast Augmentation Surgery

Recovering from breast augmentation surgery can take a while

. You may not be totally satisfied with your new breasts right away, especially when they seem to be swollen and sore in the weeks during your recovery. Read on for some tips to help you in your recovery.

Applying Ice

Have some cold compresses sitting in your freezer when you get home. You'll probably be advised to apply ice packs to your breasts off and on for the first two days following your surgery. The cold will help to reduce the swelling, as well as the pain.

Keep Your Incisions DryRecovering From Breast Augmentation Surgery

Keep water, lotions, creams, and other topical substances away from your incisions. These can irritate the area and cause extra inflammation, possibly even infection. Your doctor will probably have protected the area with gauze, but play it safe and keep liquids away!

Take Your Temperature

Don't wait until you have excessive pain to go see your doctor about possible infection. Keep tabs on your temperature by taking it often. An elevated temperature could signify the beginning of an infection, even before you begin to feel the full effects in your incision area.

Take Prescribed Antibiotics

Once again, ward off infection before it brings you extra pain and a complicated recovery. Take your antibiotics and any other medication prescribed by your doctor. Follow his or her instructions, and you'll have a great chance of an uncomplicated recovery time - meaning you'll enjoy the results of your breast augmentation as soon as possible!

Follow Instructions for Pain Medication

Your doctor may prescribe you strong pain medication. It's best to take these medications as prescribed, even if you aren't feeling unbearable pain. Stretching the time in between doses may leave you very uncomfortable while you wait for the next dose to take effect.

Also, don't wean yourself down to over-the-counter pain relievers until your surgeon gives you permission. These pain relievers can cause excessive bleeding, which could lead to complications.

Getting Your Rest

Your body is recovering from a traumatic procedure, and you'll need to get plenty of rest in the days and weeks following your surgery. But, let's face it, sleep will probably be difficult to get since you'll need to be on your back with your chest and head elevated. Be sure that you take plenty of time off of work so you can focus on recuperating. Your surgeon will be able to suggest a set amount of time. During this time, it's great if you can have someone with you during both the day and night. That way you can focus on resting, knowing you'll be woken up for meals and taking your medications on time.

Some Notes on Appearance

Your breasts will probably be swollen for up to four months after your breast augmentation surgery. Sometimes, this can be reduced by drinking plenty of water, reducing your salt intake, and participating in light exercises once your surgeon approves. You'll probably also have some bruising that will reduce with time. But, if you take good care of yourself during this time, you have a great chance of recovering from the procedure without complications.
