Petrol Vs. Diesel
Since the Fianna Fail/Green Coalition Government revised Ireland's VRT and road
tax regulations in 2008 it would seem that Ireland has gone diesel mad. Why, and can it be justified?On the face of it there would appear to be little or no decision for consumers to make. Based on CO2 emissions there is a compelling case to purchase a diesel car over its' petrol equivalent. On a model for model comparison the annual road tax is lower on the diesel powered vehicle against its petrol equivalent and the VRT reductions have narrowed the price differential between the two.
It is easy to think that with a lower road tax and generally lower fuel consumption it easy to understand why diesel fuelled cars have gained such popularity. When considering a purchase customers should take into account the overall costs of running the vehicle. As a general rule of thumb diesel engined cars are more expensive to service. The fact that the diesel car is also more expensive to purchase cannot be ignored either.
Customers need to review what their usage pattern is and how many kilometres they expect to travel on an annual basis. For high mileage drivers there is a convincing argument for diesel as the vehicle price premium can be recovered relatively quickly against the potential fuel savings.
It is when we get into the realm of the average, or low mileage driver that the equation can start to shift. If the car is used mostly for short trips in and around town with a relatively low annual
mileage it can be difficult to recover the additional purchase differential.
Another, more technical matter needs to be considered, the Diesel Particulate Filter, more commonly called the DPF. The DPF is a unit built into the exhaust system which is designed to remove toxic soot and particles from the exhaust gases. The fitment of these units is a relatively recent development and is needed to help vehicles comply with more stringent emissions legislation. During usage the DPF accumulates this toxic material and this has to be cleared out
periodically. The most common method is to heat the unit to a level where the accumulated soot will combust and is oxidized. This process is known as "filter regeneration". To carry out this process the car needs to be running at speeds higher than is normally achieved in urban driving.
In circumstances where cars are driven almost exclusively in urban conditions they would require periodic trips at higher speeds to allow the filter regeneration process to be carried out. Realistically, however necessary this is for many it is not going to be practical. If it is not done it can lead to premature failure of the DPF with repair costs in the region of 1,000, and dilution of
the engine oil with possible engine damage.
The current tax regime which favours diesel is also under review due to the collapse in revenues to the exchequer so the status quo is unlikely to remain for much longer. There's just nothing quite like getting your hands on a new set of wheels and making it your own. Unfortunately, buying a new car or buying a Used Cars Ireland can be an overwhelming experience if you are unfamiliar with the process.
