Many Now Need a Job

Many Now Need a Job

Since late 2009, many need a job due to various sincerely sad sets of circumstances. Over 10 million Americans have been thrown out into the worst job market since the Depression. Millions of new college students are still trying to break into their first jobs at the same time also.

Where does that then put you? Unemployed due to one of the following:

Reduction in force

Downsizing

Fired

Refused transfer

Company closed

Quit

When a company activates a Reduction in Force (RIF) it is because sales and production have slowed and there is not enough income to keep a full staff employed. Often this comes slowly with a small reduction (lay-off) at first. The early personnel often receive a generous package to relieve executives of feelings of guilt. However the second layoff and further ones cut deeper and the severances are severely reduced.

Downsizing generally effects a larger number of people since a significant number are cut from the payroll initially. The poor remaining soles are then requested to pick up the work previously handled by the downsized staff. This results now in two angry groups of people. Those that left and those which have to do twice the workload are harmed.

If you're depending on all of the conformist approaches and strategies to landing a job - (job boards, resume distribution, career websites etc, etc) then the chances are high that you're going to be joining the ranks of the long-term unemployed, if you haven't done so already.

In order to balance the management resources, successful people are re-assigned and some asked to relocate to a distant office. The shaky economy as well as the company lay-offs often results in many refusing to move to keep their jobs. Plus, the decline of real estate prices often make it a loss to sell a home in the current market. Thus many are unable to relocate and have to leave the company.

All the above reasons for loss of employment result in a larger than normal 9-22% unemployment. The competition for a new job becomes even stiffer with so many qualified candidates who need a job.
