How To Know If Your Dog Is Sick
As a dog owner, you have to know the early symptoms and signs of pain or illness with your dog

It is not only important to be familiar with these early signs to relieve suffering and pain, knowing if our pet is sick will also make it easier to treat their illness.Although some illnesses, such as degenerative myelopathy, do not show any signs of pain, we still need to monitor anything that can tell us if our pet is sick. Below are common things that you can check or test.
Temperature
Newborn puppies are normally 94-97 F. This is a bit lower compared to the normal adult dog body temp of 101.5 F, but it will gradually reach that as they grow, commonly at around 1 month to a month and a half old. When taking your dogs temperature, be very careful because dogs tend to move around a lot. Most animal thermometers are rectal thermometers, which mean that the thermometer might get broken off inside the dogs rectum. Another thing to remember is that their body temperature also rises because of excitement, usually to about 2-3. When your dogs body temperature is 105 up or 96 below, then it will need immediate medical attention.
Heart Rate and Respiratory Rate
The respiratory rate of a normal adult dog is 15-20 breaths a minute. However, this would depend on variables like the weight and size of the dog. Their heart rate normally goes for 80-120 beats a minute. To feel your dogs heartbeat, put your palm on the lower side of their ribcage, right behind the elbow. Many dogs have irregular heartbeats, so dont be scared if your dogs heartbeat is not like a human heartbeat. A good way to get used to the heartbeat of your dog is to ask your vet to teach you on how to locate it and hear and feel how it normally feels like.
Behavioral Changes
Any noticeable changes on the dogs behavior could be associated with illness. Changes in behavior such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleepiness, trembling and stumbling or falling could be cause by illness. When deliberating what could be causing this behavior change, always consider genetic illnesses such as degenerative myelopathy. Genetic illnesses are usually over looked until the vet finally diagnoses it. Most of the time, these illness have already done a big damage on the dogs health since it was not spotted at an earlier stage.
