The Value of a Crate to a Dog

Most dogs love having a crate as a space that is theirs alone. It is safe and easy for your dog, and very enjoyable.

How to Crate Train a Dog

Puppies are easier to crate train as they are not used to sleeping wherever they want and have less reason to be upset about sleeping in the crate.

You should place the crate in a room where the family is often. During the night it is a good idea to bring the crate into your bedroom to help your dog feel safer. When your dog is more comfortable in their crate you can start to leave his crate in just one room.

The crate should be clean, and big enough for him to move around, but not big enough for him to make a mess. Make sure there is always food and water, room for him to sleep comfortably, and a something to keep him well entertained.

Try your best not to give in to your dog if he whines. Don't pay attention to him or remove him from the crate. If you do he will only associate the whining with getting attention. Only respond after he has quieted down.

When you are first starting to train him, only leave him in the crate for short periods of time. Gradually begin to leave him in his crate for longer periods of time.

Your dog will not bark too much or get destructive if you have rained him properly. It will be easier to leave him alone for periods of time.
