Hearing Test May Need To Be Repeated On C-section Babies

A lot of moms do everything they can to avoid a C-section

, but it is true that many babies are born in the United States by C-section. For some women, it might be a matter of convenience, for others it may have more to do with fear, and others must do so because of risks to themselves and or the baby. Although there are risks with a C-section, there are no terrible dangers to mother or baby. A study has shown however, that babies born by C-section may not pass their initial newborn hearing test.

Fluid seems to stick around a little longer in these babies versus those born naturally. If the testing is delayed past 48 hours, it is likely that the baby will pass. If you have a baby who does not pass the initial testing, try not to worry. Some babies will not pass even a repeat hearing test, but then when an ABR is done, they will do fine.

The thought of having your baby be impaired in this area is very difficult. No doubt, a number of thoughts and worries run through your mind in this situation. You might even blame yourself somehow. It is important that you keep a positive attitude no matter what happens. Babies can sense when you are unhappy, so it is important to try to not treat your child any differently no matter what tests might say.

It is nice that if you have had a C-section and your baby failed the first hearing test, then you have a possible explanation. You will still want to have that follow-up exam even with this possibility. There is no guarantee that the C-section is the reason, so you would be best to get some follow-up. Your baby's pediatrician should be able to get you all set up with an ear, nose, and throat doctor that is connected with an audiologist. It is a good idea to have an ear, nose, and throat doctor anyway just in case your child's ears end up keeping that fluid longer and he or she ends up needing tubes. This might be the solution to any problems your child may have regarding auditory function. What is important is that you take every step necessary to get the answers you need in order to help your child.

C-section or not, some kids are impaired in this way, and it is discovered through a hearing test. A little over a decade ago, parents might not have known about impairment until a child was a toddler and displayed developmental issues. Thankfully, medical studies and advancements allow things to be discovered early.
