Five Tips For Parents Of Children On The Autism Spectrum

Five Tips For Parents Of Children On The Autism Spectrum

Here are five tips for parents of children on the autism spectrum:

1. Check your expectations. As parents we can have very high expectations (just as our parents had on us as children), this can be conscious or unconscious and it can really set a child up for failure.

2. Accept your child 'warts and all'. There is a difference between loving a child (no matter if they are neurotypical or on the autism spectrum) and accepting them unconditionally. With the latter being very hard. Your children have many years on this earth and so they have many hours, days, months, years to learn the art of interacting (as long as consistency in being taught is strong) and so make their learning miserable will only cause yourself and your child stress that otherwise could have been avoided. Accepting your child just means that you are not going to force them to meet the expectations of others/society, you are going to assist them in learning amazing life skills instead at their pace and at an enjoyable pace.

3. Be kind to yourself. You have an amazing child with amazing abilities that just need to time to develop in a healthy manner. Living in guilt is a waste of time and energy that could be used in more important areas. You have a child who is actually very in tune to others in their environment and they absorb the emotions of others and so by being kind to yourself, allows your child to remain focused and on a level of peace that allows their minds to be open.Five Tips For Parents Of Children On The Autism Spectrum

4. Learn to laugh! You are not laughing at your child on the autism spectrum but you are giggling about some of their antics! They can be funny and instead of being embarrassed, embrace the fact that you have been honoured to be around an individual who is not concerned with what others think. That is a very free way to be!

5. Be consistent and repetitive. You child learns in a rote manner and with consistency, so if any one of these elements are missing the child is also missing out on what they truly need. Though it may feel like you are getting nowhere because there are no instant results (in anything that is healthy) - you are planting the knowledge and tools that your beautiful child will need in order to survive this world on their own as an adult. So keep at it and eventually you and your child will succeed!

Please take these tips away with you and use them in your day to day life as I know they will be helpful for you and your child on the autism spectrum.
