Finding The Right Job: Should You Bend The Rules?

Finding The Right Job: Should You Bend The Rules?

Looking for a job can be a long, frustrating and sometimes scary process

. At times it seems there are more potential employees than there are open jobs. If you think differently, a job search can actually be somewhat pleasant. The perfect job may not be waiting, but it's possible that you can make your own perfect opportunity.

You and millions of other people know the typical steps for finding a job. Waiting to find out if you've been hired is just another step in the process. The procedures may be familiar, but that doesn't mean that you're doing what's best for you. Here are a few tips to improve your job search.

Go to the job instead of waiting for it to find you. Everyone knows to look at ads and "help wanted" posters to find a job. Instead, call some companies where you might like to work even if they aren't advertising a job opening. In this way, you put yourself on the business' radar for now or in the future. If you're familiar with the company's current dealings, it also gives you a chance to let them know how you can help with a particular situation rather than just offering general services.

Don't accept standard qualifications. Job-seekers are too often scared away from jobs because they don't have every prerequisite in an ad. In many cases, you are in no way disqualified from getting a job as long as you can show how you're qualified. Go for a job even if you don't think you fit in at first glance. For one thing, all companies will teach you their particular way of doing things. Selling your special skills to a company is a great strategy.

Be innovative in your approach. Looking for a job using proven methods can be successful, but it doesn't have to be the only way. If you're searching for jobs in newspapers and magazines then you should also look on the Internet. Furthermore, consider starting your own blog or website to display your skills or joining a reputable job forum where you can network in a brand new way.

Finding a job isn't a one-size-fits-all process. The most important thing to remember is to make the process work for you no matter what that may be. If you think creatively and go on the offensive, you greatly increase your chance for success.
