Finding A Job: Forget The Rules

Finding A Job: Forget The Rules

Job hunting can be a tedious endeavor full of ups and downs

. At times it seems there are more potential employees than there are open jobs. On the other hand, job hunting can be very rewarding even before you actually land a job. If you're motivated enough to think outside the box, you may be able to find a job that's the perfect fit for you.

Applying for jobs is a process that many people are familiar with: search the classifieds, send in a resume and then hopefully go in for an interview. After you interview, the decision is usually out of your hands. When searching for a job, consider that these "rules" could be meant to be broken. It never hurts to consider solving a problem in a new way.

Being proactive is essential. Finding open jobs is easy if you check the newspaper. Anyone can do that. An effective strategy is to get in touch with potential employers whether they have an opening or not. You can call a desirable company and sell yourself or you can ask questions that may open doors for you. If you're familiar with the company's current dealings, it also gives you a chance to let them know how you can help with a particular situation rather than just offering general services.

Your qualifications are always an asset. Companies often advertise for a position and add specifications for potential employees, such as how many years of experience they should have or specific certifications. For some positions these specifications are important, but for others they are just guidelines. Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't exactly fit the mold. Remember that every business operates differently and will teach you after you're hired. Just like the company tells you what it wants, you can tell employers what you have that they may need.

Be innovative in your approach. The most important part of a job search is making sure you maximize your potential. If you're searching for jobs in newspapers and magazines then you should also look on the Internet. Think about ways that you can distinguish yourself from other job-seekers and at the same time network with potential employers and colleagues.

A job hunt is just as unique as you. The key is to use strategies that get results for you. Creativity and being proactive are just two of the traits that can help you find the right job path.
