Menstrual Cycle
The length of the menstrual cycle differs from woman to woman. Generally, it is not less than 21 days and not more than 35 days. On an average, a woman's menstrual cycle is of 28 days. You might have heard about the term 'ovulation'. Ovulation is defined as the excretion of ovum from the ovary. The ovarian follicles rupture to discharge the ovum. The ovum then travels to the fallopian tube. Here, it stays for about two to three days and waits for fusion with a sperm. The process of fusion of ovum and sperm is known as fertilization. In the absence of sperm, the ovum disintegrates and sheds off of the body along with the uterine lining and blood vessels. This results in bleeding for three to five days, which is known as menstruation. The cycle keeps repeating in this manner till the ovum fertilizes with the sperm to initiate pregnancy.
Fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube. Since the ovum is available in the fallopian tube only for two to three days, the chances of fertilization are low, and hence the odds of getting pregnant are also very low. Studies on the human reproductive system say that the chances of conception during these days is not more than 3-5% for any woman. But do not completely depend on the figure. There have been many cases reported, where a woman got pregnant with a single sexual intercourse.

There is a certain period considered the best time to get pregnant. Ovulation takes place midway of the menstruation. Study your menstrual cycle well. Find out the number of days in your monthly periods. Suppose your menstrual cycle is of 28 days, then you are at the peak of fertility on the 14th, 15th, and 16th day before the start of the next menstruation.
There are some special signs your body gives you on the day of ovulation. You would experience pain in the lower abdomen and on the sides. Your body's basal temperature rises by 0.4 to 1.0 degrees. You would also find tenderness in your breasts and increase in the vaginal discharge. Look for these signs given by your body and make effective use to increase your odds of getting pregnant.
Fertilization
Millions of sperms are excreted in a single ejaculation. There is a fight for fertilizing the ovum among the sperms. They have to cross several barriers posed by the woman's body to reach the fallopian tube. This struggle for fertilization among the sperms follows the theory of "survival of the fittest". Only a small number of sperms are able reach the fallopian tube. A sperm is alive only for 4-5 days inside a woman's body. If the ovum is also present in the fallopian tube, there is another battle to fuse with it. Even an ovum has several layers around it that a sperm has to penetrate through to fuse with it. Only a single sperm, that is the fittest of all, wins this battle of fertilizing the ovum.
Now, looking at the average time period for which a sperm is alive and the number of barriers it has to cross, there is only 25% probability of fertilization. Therefore, even when you are at the peak of fertility, the odds of getting pregnant are very low. A healthy couple, not taking any birth control measures, can take as long as two years to hear any happy news. The odds of getting pregnant also depend on the age and the woman's health. The chances of conception are the highest when you are in your twenties. It decreases gradually after you complete 30 years of age.
You may think that during the periodic cycle of a woman, as there is no ovum available for fertilization, the odds of getting pregnant should be nil. But for your knowledge, there are again several cases reported when a woman conceived on having intercourse on the very first day of menstruation. There is no fixed criteria to determine the odds of getting pregnant. It is all a matter of chance. The only thing you can do is to relax, enjoy your life with your partner, and wait for the time when you hear the existence of a new life within you.
