Downsizing: It's Not As Difficult As You Think
There are many reasons why individuals and families have a need to downsize their home
, their possessions, and so on. Senior citizens often opt for a smaller home or condominium once their children have left home in order to obtain a more manageable living space. Often, people find themselves thrust into a downsizing situation if they lose their home or move to a new location.No matter what the cause, positive or negative, it can be a difficult process. But it doesn't have to be an utterly miserable experience. So, if you are in a position where you need to do some downsizing, allow me to offer you some advice to make a smoother transition.
First of all, be aware of your options before selecting a new place to live. This can sometimes be difficult if you are moving on short notice and/or are unable to travel to the area to which you plan to move.
But this should not prevent you from spending plenty of time on the phone gathering valuable information about potential residences. Never trust pictures posted to the internet or in brochures, as they are specifically designed to make space appear larger than it is in reality.
So, if you can, you should tour several properties. If you are unable, at least ask for specific square footage. Try to imagine where your furniture could be placed, as this will help you with the next step.
If you don't consider yourself much of a packrat, many of us hold onto unwanted or unused items because we convince ourselves that they can eventually be fixed or they were a gift from someone special.
But this will only create more chaos when you are downsizing. You might take a picture of these items if it will help you let go. Then donate them to charity or toss them, as the case demands.
Self-storage units are your friend. There is always the hope that eventually, you will be able to have an expanded space of your own, so you shouldn't feel the need to toss everything unless you would like to.
A great example of this is when a good friend of mine joined the military. Initially, he and his wife and child were cramped in tight quarters, but after a few months, they were allotted a three-bedroom house in Texas. They were so relieved that they found a Houston self storage company that they could trust.
Downsizing can cause some stress, but you should remain determined to make a space of any size completely your own. And it always helps to downsize your possessions to help you feel free to breathe.
