Difference Between ADHD And ADD Looking At The Definitions And The Treatment Options

Most people do not bother about they difference between ADHD and ADD, simply because they are not sure. For them, ignorance is bliss and they think that these acronyms refer to some attention disorder or some problem with hyperactive children. These definitions are very basic but that is what most people understand.

The real difference between ADHD and ADD is that this latter acronym stands for attention deficit disorder and there is no element of restlessness and hyperactivity at all. It is simply a matter of not being able to pay attention, having a short attention span and having great difficulty in straying focused on a particular task.

The second acronym with ADHD refers to the same problem but in this case, there is the element of hyperactivity added and that is why the H is in the acronym. The children with this condition are at a double disadvantage because they are always on the go, will be more impulsive and will also have problems of self control.

The DSM manual is used by doctors in America to help them diagnose this mental disorder. The manual distinguishes three types of ADHD. The first is the predominantly hyperactive type, the second which is the predominantly inattentive type and the third is the combined type. As we can see the latter could be referred to as ADHD but it does not fit the other two.

This is why it has been decided to use the acronyms AD/HD to describe the three types from now on or at least when the new edition is published in two years' time. The first one will be AD (attention deficit), the second will be HD (hyperactive disorder) and the combined type will be referred to as AD/HD.

As regards treatment for the condition, fierce controversy rages. The opponents of the psychostimulants maintain that there are far too many dangerous side effects and that there are long term health risks too, such as sudden death or even suicide.

The defenders say that the effects and risks have been exaggerated out of all proportion and the risks are minimal.

Whatever the truth, nobody can argue that whatever the difference between ADHD and ADD may be, the best treatment of all is the one that is the safest.
