Determining Which Treatment Would Be Right For Replacing Missing Teeth

Even a little imperfection in a single tooth can ruin your smile; imagine how terrible

it would be if you had one or more teeth missing! Such an imperfection is sure to make anyone conscious before smiling in public. The same happens if you have damaged teeth. If you are in the same situation, you need to get an appointment with a dental specialist to find out ways to fix the problem.

It is possible to rectify the problem of missing or damaged teeth with the right dentistry procedure. While dentures are the traditional method, dental implants and bridges are the advanced alternative treatments available for replacing missing tooth/teeth. The question is how do you determine which would be right for you? Here are a few details which would help you make a well-informed decision.

Consider the permanency of the solution. Dental bridges are created by bridging the gap between two adjacent teeth with an artificial pontic. Though bridges may remain intact for up to 10 years or more, these are in no way permanent solutions for replacing missing teeth. On the other hand, the implants, i.e., the artificial teeth roots, are embedded into the jawbone making them a more permanent solution.

Consider the complexity of the procedure. While fitting of bridges is a comparatively simple procedure, implants often require extensive surgical procedures. There are no specific eligibility criteria when it comes to bridges. However, good oral health is essential for undergoing implant surgery. Your dental surgeon would be able to determine whether you are a good candidate for implant surgery.

Consider the effect on your teeth and gums. Preparing the teeth for bridges involves scraping away of the top layer of the abutment teeth to ensure that the pontic can be placed between or beside them. No such damage to the teeth and gums is necessary for implants. If you have some teeth missing in a row, dental implants may be the only solution available for you.

Consider the time necessary. Dental bridge treatments require only a few visits to the dental clinic. The dentist prepares the abutment teeth at the first visit, and places permanent bridges at the next. Teeth implants involve a number of steps bone grafting, placement of implant, period in which bone grows, placement of abutment, and finally the placement of the artificial crown.

Consider the costs involved. Implants are expensive treatment option compared to bridges when it comes to replacing missing or damaged teeth. The exact cost would depend on the dental surgeon and the dental clinic you choose. However, choosing a dental treatment just because it is cheaper is not a good idea. Consult your dentist to understand the advantages of the options to determine which would be right for you.

If missing or damaged teeth prevents you from smiling in public, it is necessary to get an appointment with your dentist. However, these treatments require specialised qualification and training. If your dentist is not specialised in this area, get a referral from him/her. You may also ask your family or friends for recommendations. Online resources may be able to give you details of dentists or dental clinics specialising in these dental treatments.
