Does your insurance cover chiropractic treatments in Minneapolis

?

Hi...my name is Dr. Harlan Mittag, I'm a chiropractor, nutritionist and acupuncturist, and the founder of Mittag Holistic Chiropractic in Minneapolis and St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

People often ask me if insurance covers chiropractic treatments. The answer is yes, with some qualifiers. Chiropractors often sign contracts with insurance companies in oder to be designated as providers of chiropractic care that is covered by that insurance company. This is an agreement between me (the chiropractor) and the insurance company. Insurance companies like this because we in doing so we agree to certain regulations of the insurance company. Chiropractors like this because we get free advertising in the insurance company's provider manuals.

So the qualifier is...if the chiropractor is a provider for a specific insurance company, then you'll get the maximum pay out from the insurance company for your chiropractic treatments. That is, it will cost you the least.

Generally speaking, in Minnesota, chiropractic treatments are covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medica, Health Partners and Medicare and a number of other smaller companies. In Minnesota anyone who has been in an auto accident is also covered by the auto insurance. This means you don't need a referral from a medical doctor or anyone else if you want to see a chiropractor and be treated. Sometimes chiropractors include alternative treatments that are not covered by the insurance company. This can vary from one insurance company to another. For instance some insurances cover acupuncture whereas others do not. Generally speaking insurance companies will not cover nutritional services like nutritional consultations, or pay for vitamins and herbs. But if you have a medical savings account through your work, usually prescribed nutritional supplements can be covered through your medical savings account.
