Are Looks More Important Than Personality?
After years of taking the bus, a man decides that he's finally ready to buy his own car
. As luck would have it, he finds his dream car at a local car dealership. As he drives the car off the lot, he feels a sense of pride and excitement. He thinks this feeling will last forever, but eventually things begin to change. While he initially loved the feeling of owning something so beautiful, he eventually begins to realize that the car is not as great as it appeared to be. Men and women are not cars. However, many people gravitate towards physical beauty while neglecting to examine the qualities that lie beneath the surface. Does this mean that looks are more important that personality? The answer to the question is more complex than one might think.First impressions are important. They are basically the brain's way of figuring out whether or not a person is worth getting to know. In some situations, a first impression isn't given from a face-to-face encounter. For example, a man and a woman who were set up by their mothers may have been given information about the other through their mothers. If this is the case, then these two individuals have had more time to make a decision to start dating. However, this is usually not the case. In social settings, most people do not have mutual acquaintances to speak on behalf of another person. More often than not, people are forced to make relatively quick decisions when it comes to choosing who they want to get to know. The easiest and fastest way to assess someone is to look at them. If the person of interest is visually appealing, the onlooker is more likely to approach that person.
While first impressions are important, they are certainly not everything. Looks can be deceiving because they do not give the information needed to judge a person's character. Looks tend to get people into the dating process a little easier, but they do not keep them there. Those involved in online dating probably know this better than most people. A man might find the profile of a beautiful woman and decide to take her out. Unfortunately, her picture didn't reveal that she's an emotionally unavailable and a serial dater. While he will appreciate her beauty, he will ultimately be turned off by her personality. Outside of the online dating world, both men and women have an advantage of actually being able to observe the person. However, they may eventually find themselves in conflict with a beautiful person's personality too.
It would be a lie to say that looks are not important. However, human beings thrive on being able to emotionally connect with other human beings. While it would be nice to connect with a beautiful person, beauty has nothing to do with maintaining a connection. People tend to connect with others who share their morals and values. If two people do not share those, the beauty of either person will not matter. The relationship will be over.
