Wondering How Does Cosmetic Dentistry Differ From Orthodontics?

If you are somewhere between eight and sixteen years of age or the parent of someone

in this age bracket, then chance are you are very familiar with orthodontists from the infamous braces. These metal appliances get strapped to the front of children's teeth and are constantly being tightened and adjusted. Uncomfortable and unattractive, they are as yet the only way to get beautifully straight teeth that line up nicely. Most patients, however, are unaware how does cosmetic dentistry differ from orthodontics?

It might seem as if these two types of medical work are very similar and could basically be considered the same type of thing. Since most people tend to think of braces as solely in place to attain a better looking smile, it is easy to see how they could be confused.

The reality is that there is a lot more to orthodontics than simply approving the appearance of one's smile, although this is certainly a function that they can handle as well. These type of doctors are mostly capable of improving the way the mouth works, such as fixing an over or under bite, lining up the teeth properly so a patient can chew better, and moving around the teeth to make room for more to come in.

For an orthodontist, the main goal is that the patient should leave their office with a mouth and jaw that work properly and cause no problems while eating or talking. Everything inside the patient's mouth should be lined up correctly and fit nicely, so that they are able to function as they should.

As almost a side benefit, they can help the appearance of their patient's smile improve as they do their work to fix the function. On the other end of the spectrum is the cosmetic dentist, whose sole purpose is to make sure that the patient is happy with the look of their mouth.

Therefore, they would be the ones that you would turn to if you were looking to whiten your teeth and improve the overall color of your smile. They also do something called putting in porcelain veneers, which are essentially fake teeth to be filled in over existing ones that are not as nice as you would like them to be.

There is almost an unlimited amount of possibilities that can be thought of when trying to attain that perfect smile. Every individual and unique smile has aspects that people like and those that they do not, so someone that wants to change the appearance of theirs should go see one of these dentists. They are the ones with the know-how to make your smile worthy of the front page.

By knowing the answer to how does cosmetic dentistry differ from orthodontics, you can better find out which one you need to call if you are having a problem with your teeth that you would like taken care of. While it may be possible to go to either one of them for your specific issue, it is always best to see someone who specializes in that problem than simply someone that does it on the side.
