Woke up to a voicemail from Curtis O. Barnes - now what?
Checked my phone this morning and saw I had a voicemail from the Law Offices of Curtis O. Barnes. The message was pretty generic - just said to call them back at their toll-free number regarding a "personal matter" and that it was "urgent." No mention of what it was actually about.
I've been getting these calls on and off for about a week now. Sometimes they call twice a day, other times nothing for a few days. The thing that bothers me is that they never leave any real information. Just the same script about needing to speak with me.
I went to their website, and it looks professional enough. They seem to focus on consumer protection and debt-related issues. But I don't have any active lawsuits or judgments against me that I know of. I checked my credit report, and everything looks clean.
I'm torn on what to do. Part of me wants to call back just to get some answers and stop the calls. But another part of me is worried that if I call, I'm acknowledging something or restarting a clock on some old debt. I've read that you shouldn't talk to debt collectors over the phone for that reason.
Has anyone actually called them back and found out what they wanted? Was it a real legal issue or just a collection agency using a law firm name to scare people? And if it is a legit law firm, shouldn't they be sending certified mail instead of hounding me on my cell phone?
