Why Diets Fail
Approximately one out of three Americans is overweight and this condition has become a problem. Most of these overweight people are only a few pounds overweight but many of them are morosely obese. Most of these overweight people have tried many different diets only to find that as soon as they get off their diet, they revert back to the foods that made them overweight to begin with. This is one of the reasons why dieting no longer makes sense and a new way of thinking about effective weight loss needs to replace these old ideas.
When you are on a diet, one of the most effective tools is to reduce your portion size and eat foods that are low in fat and carbohydrates. Your brain undergoes a self-defense mechanism that indicates that you need more food. This lowers your metabolism so you store more fat in your body. Both actions make it harder for you to reach your dieting goals. With each repeated cycle of dieting, it takes longer to lose weight and it tends to return more quickly. It is also more likely that you will accumulate additional pounds each time.
When dieting, taking the weight off is not the major problem--keeping it off is! Regardless of all the various diets on the market today including the best nutrition, exercise programs, and diet plans, ninety percent of dieters regain one to two-thirds of lost weight within the first year and almost all of it within five years. If you have suffered from this yo-yo method of dieting, do not feel alone because it happens to most dieters.
To gain success with your diet requires that you understand that being obese is a complex medical problem that requires a multipronged solution including possible drug intervention. You also need to realize that being morosely obese is not a result of lack of will-power or discipline, so do not blame yourself completely. Do not delude yourself that you will not wake up hungry tomorrow. Because your brain will sabotage your best efforts at psychological control, it will make it impossible to resist cravings. Also recognize that constant dieting can perpetuate your weight problem by adversely affecting your metabolism.
An extremely important point that you will need to remember is that chronic overweight problems can only be managed, never cured. To keep your weight in "remission," you must be constantly vigilant, eating healthfully and exercising regularly.
