Hypothyroidism is more and more prevalent in the United States. It is estimated that over 20 million of Americans suffer of hypothyroidism but the numbers are probably higher. The question to ask is why hundred years ago was not existent and once again the answer can be found in our food supply and environment.IODINE: THE MISSING LINKIodine is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in our society along with magnesium and vitamin D. Since iodine is so important for thyroid function, it is normal to see more and more cases of hypothyroidism, which might all be related to iodine deficiency.Iodine has 4 important functions within our body:1) Stabilize metabolism and bodyweight

4) Maintaining a strong immune systemWhile iodine levels have dropped we have seen increasing rates of thyroid problems, prostate cancer, breast cancer and learning problems among children.WHY ARE WE GETTING LESS IODINE?Supplementation seem not to be the answer in the arising problem of iodine deficiency in the United States. Since the introduction of the process food, iodine levels are dropped and exposure to toxic competing halogens has increased (chlorine, fluorine, bromine). We get these toxic substances from the food supply, fluoridation of tap water, medication and personal care products.Halogens compete with iodine receptors causing a deeper iodine deficit.BROMIDESBromides are very dangerous for your endocrine system and are present all around us. Potassium bromate in bakery goods has been one of the main reason for overconsumption in Western cultures.Sodium bromate can be found in hair dyes, textile dyes and permanent wavesBenzylkonium can be found in many cosmetics. In sensitive people even small amounts of Benzylkonium can trigger acne.Bromine is also found in fire retardants used in carpets, mattresses, upholstery, and furniture and some medical equipment.Bromides have been already banned in many countries:1) In 1990, the United Kingdom banned bromate in bread

2) In 1994, Canada banned bromated in bread

3) Brazil recently outlawed bromide in flour products

4) The European Union has banned bromated If you are asking yourself why the FDA has not done anything about it yet, the answer is simple: again, corporate profits trump health concerns and the FDA make the interests of this big corporations, not mine, not yours.TIPS FOR A HEALTHY THYROIDIn order to normalize thyroid function, in my experience with my clients suffering of thyroid problems I have seen improvements and regressions with:1) Identifying and treat root causes such as iodine deficiency, adrenal malfunctions, hormone imbalance, toxicity and inflammation.

2) Eliminating refined vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fats which suppress thyroid function.

3) Avoid plastic, since xenoestrogen contained in it, suppress thyroid function.

4) Good healthful nutrition is the foundation of solving the problem with plenty of healthy fats. Consume foods which are high in iodine, as well as tyrosine, selenium, vitamins A and D, zinc, B vitamins, and omega-3 fats which can be found in the fats of wild animal or organ meat. Address food allergies, gluten intolerance, and foods that contain goitrogens, such as soy, which interfere with the utilization of iodine and suppress thyroid function.

5) Add more iodine containing food such as seaweed, asparagus, raw butter and fish eggs. What Your Doctor Might Not Tell You About Hypothiroidism

6) If you are on thyroid medicine for less than five years, most people find that they respond far better to natural thyroid hormone supplements that has also T1, T2 and T3, not just T4 like most medications. The best products I have used with my clients are Synthroid Armour Thyroid and Nature-Thyroid. Pharmacists can also produce natural thyroid hormone prescriptions. The more you can rid off your body of the toxic halides, the better your thyroid will function. For increasing secretion of fluorine and bromine:1) Eat more iodine containing foods such as raw butter, seaweed and fish eggs

2) Use unrefined sea salt such as Celtic Sea Salt

3) Take Epsom salts baths

4) Sweat in a far infrared sauna Do not limit yourself to take medications because your doctor gave you a diagnosis but educate yourself and take charge of your health, do not rely in a pill to get healthy.
