Physical therapy is a marvelous field that has changed the lives of millions of people
. There are several reasons to participate in this therapy as there are several different types to choose from. Many people are under the impression that it is only for people who have gotten into accidents or are recovering from injuries. This is not true. There are several different types of treatments along with several different reasons for soliciting these services.
The first and most common type is orthopedic physical therapy. This type is usually used to treat injuries and disorders resulting from musculoskeletal system problems. Those patients are usually rehabilitating from surgery which is known as post surgical rehabilitation. Typically this includes arthritis, amputations, sports injuries and joint issues. Of course, there are many other ailments that this type of therapy serves as well.
The second type is geriatric. It typically focuses on elderly people who are dealing with issues such as arthritis, hip and joint replacement, osteoporosis and much more.
The third type is neurological. As its name suggests, this therapy helps best with neurological disorders and diseases such as Alzheimer's, cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal cord injuries and more. Again, these types of therapy treat several other ailments not mentioned here.
The fourth type of therapy is known as cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation. Typically this treatment is used for those who are recovering from pulmonary or cardiac surgery. Like all types, this type of therapy works in helping the patient to recover their abilities and learn physical independence.
The fifth type of physical therapy is pediatric. It is used to help detect early disorders for younger patients. These patients include ages from infants to adolescents that could have any number of physical issues they may need to work through. Treatments of this type are used to help younger patients develop their motor skills, balance, coordination, strength and endurance. It also helps children of all ages to work through developmental issues such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy and many other similar issues. Indeed, there are several types of physical therapy treatments which are why it is good to research them to see what might work for any issues that might be occurring.
