The first step is to choose and register a domain name. You should browse a few domain registration websites before buying as prices are not consistent. Finding a name you like which is available can be the most time consuming part of the process of getting online but you need something you can live with, as you don't want to have to change it later.
Step two is to select one of the many website hosting providers available. Once again there are numerous options but for a Wordpress installation HostGator.com is a safe choice. Many website hosting providers also offer a domain name registration service and the most simple way forward is to use this. However, whilst it is simple it will probably not be the cheapest option. Some website hosting providers include a free domain in the package, this may be fine but ensure that you own it, that the extension is acceptable and that it continues to be free.
After you have signed-up for a hosting plan you will be able to access your control panel. If you registered your domain name elsewhere you will need to get your host's name servers and go back to the site where you registered the name and enter the name servers in the DNS data.
The third step is to find Fantastico in your control panel (a smiling face icon) and open it. Select Wordpress from the left column and click New Installation. Install on Domain' should already show your domain and Install in Directory' can be left blank. Complete the other fields, this data is not important as it can be changed later once you see what it is used for. The field that is important is the admin password, use a strong password to avoid any risk of your site being hacked. Click Install Wordpress' and Finish Installation' on the next page. You should now see a confirmation of the installation and a facility to email the details. You should enter your email address so that you receive a record of your logon details and URL.
You can now login to Wordpress, pick a theme you like, set-up the layout, add Plugins (additional software that gives extra functionality) then add content.
I hope the above shows how easy it is to set-up a website but in reality it cannot be done as quickly as the above implies. Having paid for your domain name you will have to wait a few hours before it will be available to you and after you have entered your host's name servers you will have to again wait 24-48 for the DNS information to be updated across the internet.
