Upper East Side Braces - Types of Fillings used in the treatment

When a dentist gives you a filling, at first they try to remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.

A filling also helps to prevent the further decay and can help to close the space where the bacteria can't enter. The important materials used for fillings include gold, porcelain, a composite tooth-colored resin fillings, an amalgam, an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin etc..

Type of Filling is Best:

Every filling is different from each other. We can easily determine the suitable filling to you and also the allergies from certain materials. There are many types of fillings like,

Gold fillings are made by an order in a laboratory and then neatly cemented into a place. Gold inlays are easy to place and anti allergic to the gum tissues, and may last for more than 20 years.

Amalgam fillings are resistant to wear and relatively inexpensive. By the nature of the color, amalgam are more noticeable than porcelain or composite restorations.

Composite resins are matched to be in the same color as your teeth and therefore looks like a natural teeth. The ingredients are mixed and placed directly into the cavity, So that the resin becomes too harden.

Porcelain fillings are called inlays or on lays and are ordered in a lab and they get bonded to the teeth easily. They can be easily matched to the color of the teeth and resist staining.

Amalgam fillings are generally strong and can withstand the forces of chewing. They are not more expensive compared to other alternatives. An amalgam filling can be completed in single dental visit.

Glass ionomer also matches the color of the teeth, but it does not match always as a composite resin. Resin-modified glass ionomer is a better match than traditional glass ionomer.

The decay or a fracture which has damaged a large portion of the teeth, a crown, or a cap are recommended for the filling. The Decay that has reached the nerve can be treated in two different ways. They are,

*Through the root canal therapy in which the damaged nerve is removed fully.

* Through a procedure called pulp capping.

Filling Procedure:

*At first a drill is made using a metal cones called burs to cut through the enamel to remove the decay. The dentist may use a lower speed drill after it reaches the dentin, the second layer of the teeth because dentin is softer than enamel.

*To clean out the decay, your dentist may use a round bur. Dentists do not use some color to judge the decay cleaning.

* After the decay removing process, your dentist will shape the space for the filling process.

*Finally these materials release fluoride to protect the tooth from further decay.

*The dentist use burs to finish and polish the tooth after the filling process.

Most of the fillings last for many years and the average life of an amalgam filling is five to seven years. But the composite fillings may not last this long.

The type of the treatment depends on the extent of damage caused by the decay in your teeth.
