Chlamydia trachomatis infection can be treated effectively with antibiotics once it is detected.
Doxycycline is an antibacterial derived from tetracycline commonly used to treat chlamydia and a variety of bacterial infections. For instance it is used to treat chronic prostatitis, sinusitis, syphilis, chlamydia, pelvic inflammatory disease, acne, rosacea, and rickettsial infections. It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria.
Chlamydia, also called as Bedsonia or Miyagawanell can occur due to various bacteria of the genus Chlamydia. Several species cause common infections in humans and animals, including neonatal conjunctivitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, and sexually transmitted infections of the pelvis and urethra. About half of the cases of nongonococcal urethritis are due to chlamydia. There are three species of Chlamydia and all of them are pathogenic to humans. Chlamydia trachoma is found only in humans. It is a major infectious cause of human genital and eye disease. Chlamydia conjunctivitis or trachoma is a common cause of blindness worldwide. Chlamydophila pneumoniae is a species of chlamydophila bacteria that infects humans and is a major cause of pneumonia.
Chlamydia trachomatis is an organism that lives in the conjunctiva of the eye and the epithelium of the urethra and cervix. It is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the whole world. It is naturally found living only inside human cells. It is responsible for inclusion conjunctivitis and the sexually transmitted diseases lymphogranuloma venereum, pelvic inflammatory disease and trachoma. It primarily affects the urethra in males and cervix in females. It can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex, and can be passed from an infected mother to her baby during vaginal child birth. It does not show any symptom, and many women do not know that they are infected. Thus it is called as the silent epidemic in women. However, in some cases white discharge from the penis or vagina may appear during urination. Most men usually show symptom. Other symptoms in women include unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, pain in the abdomen, painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), fever, painful urination or the urge to urinate more frequently than usual (urinary urgency). In men the other symptoms include a painful or burning sensation when urinating, an unusual discharge from the penis, swollen or tender testicles, or fever.
Treatments of Chlamydia are important. If left untreated, it can worsen and cause pelvic inflammatory disease in females and epididymitis in males, further leading to serious reproductive and other health problems with both short-term and long-term consequences. The diagnosis is done by tissue culture or Gram's stain of endocervical or urethral discharge. The health care usually recommends treatment with doxycycline, azithromycin, erythromycin, or ofloxacin. One should avoid sexual intercourse until drug therapy is completed and symptoms are gone.
