Treatment of Wisdom Teeth

Treatment of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth also known as third molars are the last teeth to erupt. Wisdom teeth may become a problem for you as they grow and develop in each corner of your mouth. Problems often develop gradually since development normally spans several years. Nevertheless, these gradual changes can cause sudden and severe pain.

"Wisdom teeth" are classified as molars. Molars are the chewing teeth found furthest in the back of the mouth. Most humans have first, second, and third molars.

A person's third molars are their wisdom teeth. These teeth come in behind the 2nd molars (if there is necessary room for them and they are aligned properly) usually during a person's late teens or early twenties. In most cultures, this is the ages of maturity, hence the term "wisdom." Usually there are four wisdom teeth: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right.

Treatment of Impacted wisdom teeth:

Over-the-counter pain relievers may help. Warm salt water (one-half teaspoon of salt in one cup of water) or over-the-counter mouthwashes may be soothing to the gums.

People who can't have their teeth removed because of certain health problems may also need to choose conservative treatment.

Jawbone reconstruction surgery.

Extraction of mal-positioned wisdom tooth prior to orthodontic treatment.

If the tooth is deeply impacted or difficulty with extraction is expected, the dentist may refer the person to an oral surgeon for tooth removal.

Wisdom teeth are the third molars and they normally appear after adolescence. Most people have 4 of these teeth, but some have less and some have none at all. The number of wisdom teeth you have is based on genetics, so you may want to ask your parents how many they have and what were their symptoms. There are even rare cases of having more than 4 of these types of teeth.

Nerves in your mouth may be damaged during surgery to remove your lower wisdom teeth. The lingual nerve may be permanently damaged in up to 1 in 100 people which is the nerve that helps you sense pain and temperature in your mouth. Dentists and surgeons often use an instrument called a lingual nerve retractor to move the nerve out of the way. But this can actually increase the risk of damage. The inferior alveolar nerve can also be damaged.

When the operculum does not disappear or if the wisdom teeth do not come in straight, and are caught in an angle under the gum line, extraction is the solution. If a horizontal impaction is left intact, growing ninety degrees forwards, the tooth can grow into the roots of the second molars.

Types of Impaction

You can have a bony impaction, a horizontal impaction, a diagonal impaction, or a soft tissue impaction, which primarily is at the corner of the back of the mouth. That is where there is an impingement of soft tissue where the tooth is almost covered by it and cannot erupt due to lack of space.

If you are experiencing pain in your mouth, you may be wondering how much is impacted wisdom teeth surgery going to cost me? The cost of wisdom tooth removal depends on several factors. They include the amount of experience of the dentist has, their location, the type of dental insurance plan that you have and the difficulty of the procedure.
