Stone Forest
Located in the about 100 kilometers east to Kunming City, Yunnan Province, Stone Forest is an undoubtedly unique natural phenomenon. In a total area of 400km, there are hundreds of differently-styled giant stones scattered in random fashion and giving the appearance of a deep and serene forest. Stone Forest began to take shape in the Carboniferous Period some 280,000,000 years ago. The forest was formed by successive natural and geological upheavals-firstly due to the erosion of limestone in the sea, resulting in countless stone channels and columns; and later, due to the rising of the Earth"s crust, the area became a land-mass. The stones themselves were fashioned as a result of these processes, as well as millennia of weather exposure and natural upheavals such as earthquakes. All of these factors have made the stones a truly wondrous sight. When viewed from a distance, the stone columns seem to form an impenetrable black forest, hence came the name "Stone Forest".
The main tourist spot in Stone Forest is Liziqing Stone Forest, and it consists of Stone Forest Lake, Big Stone Forest, Small Stone Forest and Plum Garden, all encompassed within a total area of 12 km. The stones in this part of the forest come in many sizes and all have their own distinct features. Some are like animals, such as horses, peacocks, phoenix, elephants, while some are like figures from everyday life or novels, leaving visitors their own imaginations. Stone Forest has been a scenic spot since the Ming Dynasty in China, and is certainly worth a place on any travelers tour itinerary.
Western Hill
Located in the west of Dianchi Lake, 15 kilometers west of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, Western Hill is composed of Huating temple, Taihua temple, and so on. The mountain range stretches more than 40 kilometers and the highest peak rises to 2,500 meters above sea level. Legend has it that there was a phoenix perching on the hill long ago, hence its name, Biji Hill(Green Bird Hill). Also, when viewed from a distance, the hill resembles a sleeping Buddha, hence came the nickname, Sleeping Buddha Hill. It is also known as Sleeping Beauty Hill, as it also resembles a beauty in repose, lying on Dianchi Lake with her hair trailing into the lake. There is a local tradition that involves climbing the Western Hill in March - the beginning of spring. On this occasion, many people congregate on Western Hill, singing and dancing, sightseeing and barbecuing, all lending the occasion a bustling excitement.
Western Hill is a wonderful place to visit with its inclines and troughs, verdant plants, bubbling springs, twittering birds and aromatic flowers, as well as a few temples such as Huating Temple, Taihua Temple, Sanqing Pavilion, Dragon Gate, and Puxian Temple. Located in the mountains some 2050 meters high above sea level, Huating Temple was built in the fourteenth century and it is the most famous temple in Kunming City. Taihua Temple was also built at the beginning of the fourteenth century and boasts many plants, all discharging sweet aromas. Wanghai Tower, which is located in the temple, is the best place from which to view the sunrise on Dianchi Lake.
