Things You Must Include on Your Bridal Shower or Wedding Invitation
Writing wedding invitations can seem counterintuitive and tricky, but they don't have to be. Follow these simple rules and you'll know everything you must include on your bridal shower or wedding invitation.
For wedding invitations:
The first thing the guests will see is the envelope. These must be hand-addressed and must use formal wording. For married guests, this looks like:
Mr. and Mrs. John Doe
Followed by their address.
For single guests, this looks like:
Mr. John Doe
or
Miss Jane Doe
After you fill out the rest of the envelope with the guests' address and your return address, you can move on to the invitation itself.
The first names listed on the invitation will be the names of the people hosting the party. If this is the bride's parents (which is common), it looks like this:
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Cummings
or
Jacob and Julie Cummings
When the bride's and groom's parents are both hosting:
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Cummings
and
Mr. and Mrs. Michel LeFleur
When the bridal couple are hosting the wedding, it will look like this:
Mr. Mark LeFleur
and
Miss Juliana Cummings
This is followed by a request. The request also tells the guests something about the wedding. If it reads:
Request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
...it denotes the ceremony will take place within a church or other religious location. For a non-religious wedding location, use the following words:
Request the pleasure of your company
at the marriage of their daughter
For a ceremony hosted by both sets of parents:
Request your company at the marriage of their children
For a couple hosting their own wedding:
Invite you to join us at the celebration of our marriage
Next, write out the date, time, and location
Saturday the twenty-first of June
Two thousand and one
at five o'clock in the afternoon
At Saint Mary's Church
Reception to follow at
Lincoln Arts Museum,
White room
If the location is a well-known landmark, you may write as above, but for many locations, you must include the address. The above is for a reception that occurs at a different location from the wedding site. For a wedding and reception in the same location, use the wording:

What to do about attire:
You may mention the attire if you will be hosting a black tie, black-tie optional, or casual event. Use the formality of the invitation wording to allude to the formality of dress expected.
What to do about children:
If you don't want children at your reception, or if you don't want your guest bringing an additional guest with them, specify the number you are inviting, such as: We look forward to seeing John and Judy there
Don't include registry information or allude to gifts on the wedding invitation. However, you may include this information in the bridal shower invitation.
Bridal shower invitations need not be as formal at all. Make sure to include a link to the bridal couple's website or blog, their registry information, and the date, time, and location of the party.
