The amazing beauty for Tahitian Pearls

Probably the readers would have heard about the Tahitian pearls which are referred as the queen of pearls for its amazing elegance and exotic nature. So, it would be better if we explain something about the rearing and cultivation of black pearls rather than keep on mentioning the amazing beauty of this fine piece of gem.

The black pearls are cultivated from the black lipped pearl oysters which are normally referred to as the Te Ufi. The scientific name for this class of oysters is the Pinctada margaritifera. These oysters are exclusively found in the lagoons and corals of the islands of French Polynesia. The rearing of these oysters is an elaborate process. First of all, the "spat" of black lipped oysters are harvested. "Spat" is nothing but young ones of mature black lipped oysters. These are harvested when these matured oysters produces spawn and these spawn in turn form the spat.

The spat so produced fix themselves to the sea bed or the coral from where it can be harvested by the farmers by mechanical means. These spat are then reared under water for approximately three years to ensure that they grow up in the perfect conditions. Black lipped oysters are very sensitive and rearing them is a tough task. Once the oysters are mature enough, they are grafted with small round structure called "Mother of Pearl" into their body by surgical methods. "Mother of Pearl" is the material onto which the pearl forming substance, the nacre deposits. In fact Nacre is also referred as "mother of pearl", but here in the case of cultivation of black pearls, they are artificially grafted into the bodies of black lipped oysters.

Nacre is a composite material containing aragonite, calcium carbonate, chitin etc which are essential for the formation of Tahitian pearls. The grafting of "Mother of pearl" into the body of the oysters renders increased secretion of nacre, thus ensuring that pearls are formed in a relatively quick time. The nacre secretions get deposited gradually and after a period of 30 months to 35 months, the oysters are opened to get the pearls. The pearls obtained are cleaned, washed and processed to meet the requirements.
