And what's more, they will probably gain more weight than they lost during their extreme weight loss efforts for a number of reasons. For most people, weight loss is not about getting rid of every food they like but about changing the way they view food in general. It is about portion control and learning that calories that you drink add up just as fast as calories that you eat. And it is about learning why diet sodas and energy drinks can be just as detrimental to weight loss as the average candy bar and may actually be more harmful in the long run.

Weight Loss Shock Number One: What You Drink May Invite Death To Knock

According to research by the American Heart Association, there have been 6,000 excess deaths in the past ten years that can be directly blamed on increased consumption of sugary drinks such as soda and fruit drinks. The problem with sodas, in addition to the high sugar content, might be the carbonation, which leads to stomach bloat and discomfort. But diet sodas may be even worse, especially for those who suddenly switch from one to the other.

The body gets used to the taste of the regular soda and expects the sugary kick. When that does not happen, it sends up protests to the brain, signaling cravings for more and more sugar, which may lead to a binge and more calories than we need. Diet sodas may also cause other problems as well. Most are loaded with sodium, which makes you thirstier than you were before and makes you drink more and more. In addition, a recent study showed that for every can of diet soda that you drink daily, your risk of being overweight increased by 41%.

Fruit drinks, even pure fruit juice, have higher calorie counts than the actual fruit plus they lack the fiber that the fruit can give us. In addition, eating an orange or an apple requires work to eat and to digest. The juice, on the other hand, requires no effort at all. It is better to stick to water and eat the fruit to aid your weight loss efforts.

Tea, especially green tea, has been suggested as one of the best beverages to drink, especially for those who are working toward weight loss, however, it is important to read labels carefully, especially with the packaged tea drinks on the market. Snapple's Asian Pear green tea, for instance, has 120 calories per bottle while the Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng and Honey has 175 for 20 ounces. Snapple's tea has 32 grams of sugar, but only 25 mg of EGCG (the antioxidant that everyone talks about with green tea). Arizona's tea has more sugar (42.5 grams) but less EGCG (5 mg). Green tea is a healthy choice, however, it is better to brew your own so that you can control the sugar content and other ingredients. Adding organic honey for sweetness is a good idea because it boosts the antioxidant quality, but it should be used in only very small amounts.

Weight Loss Shock Number Two: The Little Extras Add Up

For most people, making healthier food choices such as salads seems like a good idea; however there are a ways to take that healthy salad to a calorie disaster in a bowl. The typical fast food, chicken Caesar salad has about 570 calories per serving and some of them are actually larger than a single serving size, making them almost a whole day's worth of calories in one sitting. Making a few subtle changes can make the salad a healthier choice. These changes include low fat, balsamic vinaigrette instead of the Caesar dressing to lose 150 calories, grilled chicken instead of crispy, fried chicken to lose 110 calories, and skipping the croutons completely to lose another 60 calories. The salad is now a more healthy 320 calories, the amount your meals should contain.

Sauces can also be a problem. Ketchup got a bum rap a few years ago during the whole anti-carb movement, but it is only 30 calories per ounce and mustard is only 3. Problem sauces include Arby's Tangy Southwest Sauce with two ounces containing 230 calories, and Wendy's Wild Buffalo Ranch Dipping Sauce at 170 calories for less than two ounces, most of which is fat. Other sauces are equally devastating to your otherwise healthier food choices at these fast food places and are typically high in both fat and sodium. According to the National Restaurant Association, 73% of adults are trying to eat healthier in restaurants than they did two years ago, however, they may be losing all the ground they have gained by adding these sauces without considering the content and calories.
