Stop The Destructive Chewing Habit In Your Dog
It seems like double talk when we say destructive chewing because in reality all chewing is destructive
. Have you ever seen anything that has been chewed that wasn't destroyed when you dog is done, well I haven't. Your dogs teeth are pointy and very sharp so by the very nature of chewing destruction is always going to be the end result. A better way of describing destructive chewing would be inappropriate chewing. This would be chewing on things like furniture and household items. Whereas appropriate chewing would be chewing on his toys or dental chew bones.Why do dogs chew?
1) It is the natural thing for a dog to do and is rewarding. For example chewing on a bone that is beef flavored.
2) If your dog is nervous, bored, lonely or anxious chewing provides him an outlet for his emotions. Chewing is soothing and makes him feel better.
3) Dogs need exercise and chewing is a way to burn up nervous energy and gives them something to do.
How can you prevent your dog's destructive chewing?
1) It is up to you to take control of your dog's situation. Keep his stuff where he spends most of his time and make sure he has plenty of chewable toys. Don't expect your dog to have self control because dogs are naturally curious and they explore with their nose and mouth.
2) Teach him what is appropriate to chew and what is not. If your dog gets used to chewing on things like old shoes or socks then any shoe or sock is fair games. Remember he doesn't know the difference between an old or new shoe. Scold him when necessary in a calm firm voice but don't start yelling at him. Praise him when he behaves well.
3) Make sure he has plenty of chewable toys and bones. There's no end to the supply you can find at the local pet store. This is especially true for puppies and young adolescent dogs. Keep changing his toys so he doesn't get bored. Dogs are alike like children, they want new things to play with every few days.
4) Spend lots of time playing and exercising your dog. Also get him socialized with other dogs and people. A good place for this is an off-the-leash dog park. They're great because all the dogs are running free and socializing with each other. Besides teaching him to behave himself when out in public your dog will also tire himself out.
Above all else keep a productive attitude and don't expect more from your dog than what is realistic. No one is perfect and this applies to your dog as well. There's going to come a time when he gets into something where he is not supposed to be and things will get damaged. Take this is stride, it happens and it is a part of growing up. It takes some time for your dog to learn the ropes especially when he is very young. Your dog needs lots of love and patience from you otherwise he will begin to feel unwanted and neglected. Remember a dog is the most loyal and loving pet you can have for yourself and your family. Don't abuse his trust, all he wants is your love and affection.
