There are a million ways to advertise ones company
, these days online, in the street, by word of mouth and through all sorts of promotional junkets. All of these ways work and all of them are highly useful in terms of widening a target audience or generating new business. Theres one area, though, where all the new fangled advertising tech cant help, and never will help and its one of the most important areas of all in daily business running. The top level meeting, where MDs and highly placed executives meet to discuss business arrangements, new contacts and contracts, and so on. Here, printed business cards are still king. They always will be. Why? Because some things never change and the top levels of management are squarely placed in that category.
Top level management, for all its innovation and drive, is a pretty staid and traditional old beast. When all is said and done, the high level employees of every company still like to exchange normal, sophisticated looking little cards, bearing their name, the company name and business, and some contact details. In one way, thats completely understandable these details are all a new contact needs, and having them all in one easy to store place makes a lot of sense. Theres another way, too, in which printed business cards make an irreplaceable mark on the business environment perhaps the most important way of all and thats in the domain of seriousness.
What does that mean? Well, in business, its extremely important to be taken seriously. Unless ones pitch or appearance is deemed suitable by the person or persons one is pitching to, no business results. All the new forms of contact making, while admirable in and of themselves, and for their intended purpose, lack a certain gravitas which is to say, they can make a user appear to be less than serious about the meeting he or she is attending. Printed business cards, on the other hand, are quiet, sophisticated little fellers, gently pointing out a seriousness of purpose and knowledge of the way business meetings work. Thats probably the most important aspect of all. What business men and women want, in their dealings with other business men and women, is evidence that they are able to work in the same way. The printed business card basically acts as a standard acknowledgement that everyone is going to do business according to an unspoken, unwritten set of practice rules.
What one is talking about here is a simple statement of belonging. Printed business cards show their recipients (i.e. the people to whom they are given) that the bearer is claiming membership of the same club. Albeit from a different faction (their own company) but still the same club, with the same rules and the same code of conduct. Those little cards are all about trust. About giving notice to a new contact or business partner that ones company is an organisation to be trusted. Nothing else will do. In the world of the high end meeting, its standard cards or bust.
