Ski Holiday Industry Predict Good 2011

Expectations from many in the travel industry are that the number of people taking

a ski holiday over the 2010/11 season will be comparable to the last couple of years, lower than 2005-7 when a winter holiday was becoming more and more the norm.

It was after Lehman Brothers collapsed and ignited the banking crises when the number of people taking ski holidays dived - not least because there were high numbers of people who worked in the banking and finance industries who were skiing for a week or two.

It wasn't just Europe that benefitted from the bankers bonuses spent partly on the slopes - Wall Street had it's own in the industry who would take a long weekend or longer skiing at the best resorts in Colorado and Canada, and some of the British would jet off to North America instead of Europe.

The U.S. resorts that became well known among the Wall Street fraternity include Aspen, Breckenridge, Lake Tahoe and Vail, while in Canada Whistler was the number one choice, with Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise also popular - Whistler hosted the Winter Olympics earlier this year.

Back in Europe, Swiss ski holidays became in vogue, and the number of people taking Swiss ski holidays soared. The resort of choice was Klosters, with Verbier, Villars and Zermatt also doing well. Klosters' fame was boosted by annual trips from members of the British Royal Family, notably Prince Charles with sons William and Harry.

In today's market Klosters will still do well as there are sufficiently wealthy people to ensure its continuation, and it has just started combining its facilities with nearby Davos - home of the annual World Economic Forum. Of the two Klosters has the charm associated with Swiss ski holidays while Davos provides mass scale accommodation.

It isn't just the expensive resorts that have seen less visitors since the banking crises, as the knock on effect on other businesses and subsequent unemployment - and worries about unemployment - have caused many skiers to rein back their spending, and resorts across Europe, the U.S. and Canada have all experienced drops in visitor numbers over the last two years.

Bulgaria became popular for cheap ski holidays, replacing Andorra as the European budget destination. Andorra moved with the market and spent millions on her infrastructure to attract all levels of skiers, and 5 star hotels in Soldeu, Michelin Star restaurants and spas were built to challenge the French ski holiday market - but as the banking crises enevloped the travel world, Andorra's lack of foresight saw her number of visitors drop dramatically.

But the 2011 ski holidays season should be good for Andorra, as one major tour operator has increased capacity by twenty per cent - it could mean first class skiing at pretty low prices, and Andorra might be worth looking at for those considering 2011 ski holidays - the main resorts are Soldeu, Arinsal and Pas de la Casa.

Tui, the travel group who run both Crystal and Thomson Ski have increased capacity by eight per cent overall for the 2011 ski holiday season - and if they're increasing capacity they must be confident that things are getting better for the sector, as they are in touch with more skiers than any other travel group in the UK.

Overall France looks like it will capture 35 per cent of the market this year, meaning French ski holidays will be number one in the UK again, a position unlikely to change in the next few years, even with Andorra picking up again and possibly taking some of the French ski holidays market away.

With a rosy scenario for the year ahead, the industry will be pleased to see people returning to the slopes in 2011.
