Shin Splints - Prevention & Treatment

Shin Splints - Prevention & Treatment

Shin Splints are generally caused by a stretching of the muscle surrounding the shin bones. As the muscle stretches from the rotation in the feet and legs as we walk or run, a separation occurs from a tearing of the muscle from the bone.

If the condition is allowed to continue, the bone can develop very small, tiny bone stress fractures. Needless to say, this can be very painful. And worse yet, even with x-rays, the fractures may not be noticeable until several weeks later.

The x-rays actually detect the new bone growth within the small stress fractures. Once detected, shin splints can be then diagnosed and even though the healing process has begun, diagnosis means the patient and treating professional can concentrate on the root cause to prevent a re-occurrence of the problem.

Sufferers should consult a doctor to ascertain the extent of the injury and to discuss prevention. Rest, elevation of the affected area, ice packs and ibuprofen can help to reduce swelling and inflammation. However, unless the root cause is discovered, the condition will re-appear and likely worsen.

Unfortunately, in most cases, shin splints are a chronic problem. Prevention means a change in activities which is sometimes not possible and in most cases, not a desirable solution. The answer is then to find a method to significantly reduce stress off the muscles around the shin bone.

Stress can be reduced by both a reduction in rotation of the feet and legs and by properly aligning the feet which will permit proper foot arch function. When the foot arch functions correctly, alignment, balance and stability will follow.

To insure alignment, balance, stability and proper foot arch function, it is likely the patient should wear a good quality Orthotic Arch Support Insole in his shoes. And because in most cases, the patient actively participates in vigorous activities, such as sports or running/jogging, it is also recommended that he/she wears good quality shoes that are designed for those activities.

The likely cause of the excessive rotation is over-pronation. That is, an inward rolling of the foot at the ankle. This rolling bends the foot at the ankle which causes pain in the foot, ankle, knees, hip and back. By properly supporting the arch, the over-pronation can be corrected and with that, the foot arch can function properly which greatly decreases the chance of injury caused by lack of alignment.

Superfeet Premium Insoles offer a variety of high quality Orthotic Insoles for all types of shoes and all types of activities. Whether you are a man or a woman with high arches, low arches or somewhere in between, Superfeet has just the right style that is perfect for you.
