Sedating Vs. Not Sedating During Dentistry Procedures

A lot of dentists' patients would rather receive surgery regarding cosmetic dental issues without the use of complete sedation

. Many are frightened by the process or side effects of anesthesia.

There are a number of dentists that do not use this type of medication when performing surgeries or procedures that call themselves "pain free." These types of professionals use only local anesthetics.

This is the basic form of dentistry, and is not necessarily anything special. Just because someone claims to be "pain free" does not meet that you will not experience some discomfort.

In fact, more intense and extensive oral surgeries done in this manner make take more recovery time and cause you more pain in the long run. Many argue that sedation is too expensive.

However, there is a difference between sedation dentists and ones that perform IV sedation. The first will provide patients with a low dosage of anti-anxiety medications before going through with any type of surgery on the mouth or teeth.

This type of medication is very mild and will only put patients at a relaxed and eased state. They will not feel pain, but may feel some pressure or movement on the teeth and gums during the process.

This is a good option for those that do not want to be put completely to sleep, but wish to experience as little pain as possible. Many dentists also give these types of medications to individuals that come in and are frightened or have anxiety about going under the knife.

It makes it simple for the individual to relax and stay calm while in the chair. It also makes it easier for the doctor to perform the surgery, because the patient is not in distress or preventing the tools from entering the mouth.

Some may prefer to be in a complete sleep during a cosmetic/oral surgery. This is especially beneficial when the process will take a long time or the doctor must enter the gums and jaw, such as with wisdom teeth removal.

In this type of state, individuals are given an IV of medication that will put them completely unconscious. There is always somewhat of a risk with going under anesthesia, so discuss your concerns and questions with the anesthesiologist beforehand.

They will be able to explain how you will fall asleep, reassure your concerns, and put your mind at ease regarding the safety of being put under. If you choose this method of sedation, you will be completely pain free during your surgery.

You will definitely experience grogginess after the fact and will need some recovery time. Complete anesthesia requires that you bring a friend of family member with you to take you home, because it is illegal and dangerous for you to drive under the influence of these types of drugs.

It is understandable why some would opt out of receiving this type of care. Anesthesia can be very expensive, even if the patient has insurance to cover their medical bills.

Many do not believe that sleep sedation is worth the price and choose to go through the surgery with less pain medication. This is a fine option for those that can handle a little more pain and discomfort.

However, it has been proven that the more pain you feel during and after oral work, the slower it will take for you to heal. Pain causes emotional and physical strain on individuals, and keeps the body from efficiently going through the natural healing process.

Those that only have a small amount of time to recover may want to reconsider the use of sedation. It also makes it easier to have more work done at one time, saving you more visits and time, overall.

If you have to keep spending time at the dentist's office because they must perform "pain free" surgery in little bits at a time, recovery will take much longer and you will find yourself having to go through many procedures. Once you have gone through with any form of cosmetic or necessary dentistry, you must make an effort to take better care of your teeth.

Surgery is only needed when the individual has neglected to properly care for their oral hygiene or taken too long to have problems looked at by a professional. The more you study about the different types of medications given during oral procedures, the more prepared you will be to discuss your options when you meet with your dentistry professional.
