. There are unfortunate misconceptions regarding this condition, as it can be contracted by anyone. Often several family members will be affected by scabies at the same time due to their close living situation and sharing of particular items.
Sarcoptic mange and the itch are just a couple of other names used for this skin condition. The infection is the result of the involvement by a parasite. This particular parasite is a mite known as sarcoptes scabiei or also called the itch mite. Not only found in humans, but in dogs and cats, this condition results in what we know as the mange.
This condition can affect anyone that has come in contact with a person that has it, or if a personal item has been shared with infected persons. It can also be spread by using keyboards, toilets, bed sheets and towels. There is a large misconception that contracting this condition means a person is not clean, and this is not true. Transmission of mites happens quite easily between people and objects.
Itching is one of the first related symptoms that becomes more intense as the mite creates burrows in the skin to deposit eggs. The mites will continue to move around causing further irritation, and rashes may also appear. One of the most apparent signs are the zigzag symbols raised on the skin which show the burrows created by the mites.
It takes between three and ten days for the eggs that are placed by the female to hatch, and they too begin to move. An allergic reaction causes the rash that appears on the skin, but it is related to fecal matter from the mites, and not necessarily due to their movement. The adult mites can survive for as much as four weeks within a host.
Antiparasitic oral medications are available by prescription as treatment. Topical treatment will also work in some cases and these medications include permethrin, sulphur and lindane lotion to name a few. It is best to prevent the situation from happening as there is currently no vaccine available.
Once an infestation has occurred, it is necessary to prevent further transmission and to treat infested belongings. Bedding and furniture must be treated with some type of antiparasitic spray. Permethrin is used in many forms of insecticides on the market. All clothing and bedding should be washed in hot water and dried on a high setting; this should be done daily and not allow piles of clothing to accumulate. Bathrooms, especially tubs and showers need to be cleaned every day. All carpet and rugs must be vacuumed thoroughly.
