Sarcoidosis Treatments
There are many autoimmune diseases that can wreak havoc on our health
, and one of the most potentially serious of these is sarcoidosis. Although it can affect virtually any major organ in the body, sarcoidosis most commonly affects the lymph nodes and the lungs. The condition causes the formation of tiny growths in the tissues of these organs called granuloma.
These lumps don't usually cause a health problem, and many people with sarcoidosis go on to live happy and healthy lives free of any noticeable symptoms of the disease. However, there is a risk that the condition may progress to a serious health problem when the lumps grow larger and begin to from clumps. When this happens, they can severely affect the function of the specific organ.
Sarcoidosis is considered an autoimmune disease wherein the natural defense system of the body attacks certain organs in response to a perceived threat. There is still some uncertainty with regard to what exactly causes the disease, although it has been linked to certain environment and genetic factors. Some scientists also believe that the condition may be caused by a bacterial infection or a reaction to medication.
In an interesting twist of events, the tragedy at the World Trade Center in 2001 actually helped shed some light on a potential cause of the disease. A few years after the incident, several workers exposed to the dust from the rubble reported developing the symptoms of sarcoidosis along with other pulmonary related conditions. This appears to support the theory that sarcoidosis is caused by exposure to certain types of airborne matter and byproducts of combustion.
So what is the treatment for sarcoidosis? Unless the symptoms of the condition become very apparent and begin to affect the health, sarcoidosis treatments might not actually be necessary. Most cases of sarcoidosis will actually clear up without medical intervention, although each case should be closely monitored if the condition takes a turn for the worse. If the condition begins to affect the health in any way and impairs the function of the organs, immediate medical attention will be necessary.
Corticosteroids such as prednisone are usually the first sarcoidosis treatments to be prescribed. Doctors may also prescribe the use of anti-inflammatory drugs applied directly to the affected area. If the granulomas develop close to the surface of the skin, treatment may involve using a topical cream. For people that develop granulomas in the lungs, medication may be administered with the use of an inhaler.
Keep in mind that using these drugs is not without its risks. The effect that oral corticosteroids will have on the organ will have the same effect on the rest of the body as well. When you undergo these types if treatments therefore, you are likely to experience some unwanted side effects. Some of the effects that you can expect with oral corticosteroids treatment are insomnia, mood swings, and depression. Some people may also notice a weakening of the bones and they may even put on some weight.
